Another right shot, center utility type of player that scored 15G+23A last year (0.48 ppg) and 11G+18A the year prior (0.43 PPG).

Derek Ryan has long been an appealing option to me -- I said the Flames should've traded for him at the deadline -- but I don't want him for more than two years. Max! He's 31!

Not to say that those differences won't change in the future, but as of right now the Flames gave up offence in this trade.

Dumb comparison.
Ferland isn't taking Johnny with him.

Duhatschek seems to really like the deal for Calgary.
Said he watched a lot of CAR because he had a few of them in his pool. Before the trade he thought Elias Lindholm was a great guy to target. He thinks the Flames dealt 1 difference maker (Hamilton) for 2 guys who can be difference makers (Hanifin and Lindholm.)
Interview is still on so the audio probably won't be up for a while.

If he signs here he's an improvement to a bottom 6 that didn't really set a physical tone or chip in all that much.

Why do people keep insisting that we have given up offense?
If you think that the bottom six was bad in Calgary, look at the bottom nine in Carolina. They were not hard to shut down.

As for "working something out woth Fox"? Treliving tried. Right up until the draft began on Friday he was talking to AF representatives. Its pretty obvious he was told that AF wasn;t signing with Calgary. As such there was no option but to deal him. That deal happened to be the Hanifin/Lindholm trade that doesnt happen without AF being included.
|
The difference to me is that a team can give a draft pick a strong incentive to sign while playing junior that they cannot give to a draft pick playing college hockey. The point of the draft is to drive parity (drafts are seeded for a reason), and give weaker teams a chance to build. If too many players bypass the teams that drafted them a two tier system subtly arises, where more desirable locations such as New York develop advantages over less desirable locations such as perhaps Winnipeg (for example, not trying to slam anyone).

If it wasn't Johnny, it was dump and chase, and that means that we were willingly giving up possession most of the time.

If Lindholm can do this it will be huge. But only so far as it allows one of these carry the puck in type players to play with Jankowski and Bennett. If you have three lines with a guy that has this ability you are golden. I believe this is the key to unlocking more offence. If you can get controlled entries it tells me you can handle the puck, you can break down defenders one on one. If you can combine the vision to set up teammates for great scoring chances you are going places.
It's like having Gaudreau on every line (some form of him anyways). So you have Gaudreau, Backlund and if you add Lindholm and Hanifin to his ... wow.
That alone will get you more goals.

Not an analysis, a statement of fact.
I am not saying these players cannot or will not improve their point totals on the Flames, only that their numbers are less than the players they are replacing. Full stop.
For a team that was already hurting for goals, bringing in two players who put up fewer goals is a gamble. Anyone who wants to make projections, go ahead. There are some good cases to be made. But then we all thought the Flames would be a playoff team with one of the best defences in the league a year ago. So until it happens, projections are what they are.

Did Lindholm say anything about preferring to play RW on the top line vs C on the 2nd or 3rd line? He's previously said he wants to play at C, no?

Played mostly wing then played c then wing and then c last year. I think he prefers C but also said he doesn't care as long as he is helping the team win. I do think wants more stability. That seemed pretty clear listening to him today.

He was pretty generic about everything, including this topic. He said that at one level of hockey, he played C, and at another level, he played RW, and that he doesn't GAF which one he plays, he just wants to fit, and play.
