Nobody else is going to go after them. We need someone to stand up to these monsters. They are poisoning people with their constant supply of drugs.

He is President of the country that is massively impacted and affected, though. I’m not sure other more diplomatic solutions have worked well in the past, either. Also, it’s really unclear how high up the cartel goes in the Mexican government and they could be actually just straight up compliant / working with them.
This one seems like it makes sense to me, and also seems like something the Democrats would consider doing too (ie. not really partisan)?
I’m also not convinced he’s doing this so he can set up his own cartel to sell drugs to Americans and profit off of and I think that suggestion is wildly over the top.

Governments have been going after the suppliers since before the war on drugs began- it doesn’t work.
Some other countries are having some success with rehabilitation of the users but that takes patience and compassion. Not as much fun as blowing stuff up.

Felonious, demented, child rapist Trump who is now openly threatening the entire western hemisphere invaded Venezuela on false pretenses, claiming it was about drugs, while he pardons criminals and drug lords. But yeah, let’s believe he’s going to invade Mexico to stop the drug cartels. Have people gone totally mad?

You could wipe the cartels off the map and it would take 10 minutes for someone to fill the void. Too much money to be made.

Drone surveillance is the game changer here. It isn't hard to track the flow of drugs manufactured in Mexico, it just comes down to the political will to take these people out.
I'm not normally one to advocate for extrajudicial killings, especially by a foreign government, but nothing else has worked so far. I hate to agree with Trump on anything, but he's right when he says that the cartels are much more powerful and influential than the Mexican federal government.

Going after cartels in that manner is similar to going after a group like Hamas. They aren't easy to identify, they embed themselves in the community, use children as part of their workforce, and many of them are only part time or have other gigs or day jobs. If you do it, you need to prepare for high rates of civilian collateral damage.

It also won't stop ####, but we know this already. Nice little showy distraction for the base, but don't go after the Sackler family and Purdue Pharma.

So, you believe that Trump is threatening to do this because he is fighting for the drug addicts in America?

Call me naive, but why else? I lost someone very close to me to addiction about a year and a half ago. I don't blame anyone for my friend's death, but perhaps he wouldn't have died so young if drugs weren't so widely available.

His entire inner circle are cokeheads or drunks. I would guess this is most likely a shakedown for a cut of cartel profits.

I sort of think also that going after the big cartels could be Trump's undoing at the hands of the cartel. Yes Trump has the US military and all the might of the CIA etc but the large cartels can get things done of their livelihoods and existence are threatened.

The recent drop in fentanyl related deaths in the US was a result of Biden era negotiations with China to put policies in place that target manufacturers in China.
Extra judicial killings against cartels will have about as much effect as it did in getting rid of the Taliban.
And the above ignores the fact the fascist admin is only using the drug problem as an excuse to do extra fascism and protecting what I can only assume is the most prolific child rapist in history until the files prove otherwise.
