Greg Allensworth (the umpire who shafted Shapo in DC) finds himself in another sticky situation tonight. Hawk-Eye failed to utter a sound when a ball was clearly out, why is the umpire not over-ruling it and calling the ball out? It was a pretty important point as well.

You can't question the effort from Bianca tonight, but you can certainly question the tactics. Just way too aggressive combined with way too many unforced errors.

This is sadly copy and paste from most of her matches in the last several years. The unwillingness to grind is unfortunately tied to her injury risk so there’s no simple fix to get Bianca back to where we thought she’d be at this point.

This looks to be exactly the case - I understand the need to keep the points as short as possible, but you need to be willing to grind especially on break points. I think Bianca was something like 1-for-11 on break points last night and some of them were quite simple service return errors that she either dumped in the net or hit wide/long. You have to find a way to put that ball in play.

Felix makes short work of Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-3 6-1 and kicks off his Cincinnati campaign on a winning note.

Credit to Leylah for battling hard and coming back from a set and a break down to defeat Yue Yuan 3-6 6-4 6-3. Hard to believe this is her first ever win in Cincinnati. Tough one coming up next though as she takes on Rybakina although Elena hasn't played much tennis over the last month or so.

Here's hoping Felix can make it three in a row against Ruud tomorrow.

Bianca has received a wild card for the US Open...On the men's side, both Stan and Domi have been granted wildcards.

There is a new podcast with 4 American players (Isner, Sock, Johnson and Query) called the nothing major podcast and they mentioned that travel between the 2 cities are brutal as there is no direct flight and lots of time when a player goes deep in Canada they get to Cincy very late.

Jiri Lehecka knocks off Meddy in straight sets just now in Cincinnati. I think that's Jiri's biggest win by ranking in his career.

That's an awesome podcast with real players instead of journalists.
I used to like The Tennis Podcast but it's gotten too whiny and political.

You can't expect to beat Rybakina by gifting her free points via double faults. Leylah is even catching her on a bad day as Elena is far from her best, but this is the problem when you lose winnable matches to players like Krueger in Toronto last week, your ranking stays in the 25-30 range and then you face top players early in tourneys.

10 double faults now for Leylah - She had a set point in set 2 to force a decider, now she has to break Rubakina to get into a tie-break. Her service toss is all over the map today.
Edit: Rybakina at 40-15 hits two double faults of her own and then Leylah plays two great points to force that 2nd set tie-break.

My goodness, just a total collapse by Rybakina late in set 2 and Leylah will play a 3rd set. This has not been a high quality match, it's anyone's guess who takes it now.
After two sets of play, Leylah has 3 aces and 10 doubles faults. Elena has 16 aces and 16 double faults.

Maybe Leylah needs someone else to help her with her serve as it's just not good enough and keeping her from reaching the next level.

First thing she needs to do is fix her toss, sometimes she catches her toss when it's obviously poor and resets, but other times she decides to hit her serve even if the toss is way off the mark. It shouldn't be that difficult to get a consistent ball toss, but today has been an adventure.
