I don't think they ever really tried to rebuild as they were trying to win and failed hard into most of those 1st overall picks.

Everyone is leery of Kadri. The Flames need some kind of plan though. Options seem like:
1. Rebuild.
2. Sign Kadri, who is the only good UFA left.
3. Trade away a bunch of assets for a top level talent currently playing on another team.
Option 3 looks pretty awful. The only good way I see that working out is to sell high on Mangiapane and trade him for a legit PPG player, and hopefully the Flames don't add much. This is a bit of a hail mary, but you never know.

Which would just be so dumb, and such a Flames thing to do.
It’s like nobody ever told them “never be the last one to leave a party”.

A step down from last year's club, but capable of making the playoffs IMO. Sutter is not here to tank.

Replacing Gaudreau's offence with Toffoli is a "step down". That's an understatement. FML. Could be what we need to trigger the rebuild though.

Sutter is going to be the GM before this is over.
Time is a flat circle.

Option 4 might be to add some short term contracts to guys not getting the interest they think they should be and are looking for a prove me contract.
Might be an ok option but the Flames need to flip these guys or other players
Or gain assets bailing out teams looking to dump salary
If Tkachuk did resign and Kylington and Mangiapane did long term as well the Flames probably don’t have cap space

Because the path forward has never been clearer for this organization. The sooner people admit it, The easier it will be to digest. If Tkachuk wont commit for 8 years at "Reasonable" number, you move the circus and get a new group to BUILD around.
If your down two 100+ point players (One was heavily inflated). These holes you cant plug and fix today or free agency or through out the summer. That's rebuild territory.
Rip the ####ing bandaid off. We just finished 8 years of up and down success with Johnny, Monahan core.
What teams are trading their 100+ point wingers? None that will come to Calgary.
Calgary is fortunate that we haven't touched any of our big guns in the AHL.

The embraced the rebuild through the Hall, RNH, Yakupov drafts for sure.
Then yeah ended up trying to start to be good, still sucked, and got McDavid and Draisaitl.
Still started with embracing the initial suck though.

Palat is great but what does that do to sign him to a 6 or 7 year deal? We’re not close to the core of Colorado or Tampa. And it’s too early to say he should be part of the rebuild going forward. We have to build through a core and then adding pieces. The core, I would argue, has to be brought in through smart drafting. Then you add pieces to build around them. The time horizon has to be 4 to 5 years down the road. Kicking the can further prolongs the agony.

That's basically a do nothing plan. I really hope that's not the plan, or a the very least that's the plan just for this year and the rebuild starts at the deadline.

Yeah, but they won't trade Tkachuk if he will sign long term and you have already decided he won't.
