Campbell's contribution was to take this idea of archetypes and use it to map out the common underlying structure behind religion and myth. He proposed this idea in The Hero With a Thousand Faces, which provides examples from cultures throughout history and all over the world. Campbell eloquently demonstrates that all stories are expressions of the same story-pattern, which he named the "Hero's Journey," or the "monomyth." This sounds like a simple idea, but it suggests an incredible ramification, which Campbell summed up with his adage "All religions are true, but none are literal." That is, he concluded that all religions are really containers for the same essential truth, and the trick is to avoid mistaking the wrappings for the diamond.

Lucas had already written two drafts of Star Wars when he rediscovered Joseph Campbell's The Hero With a Thousand Faces in 1975 (having read it years before in college). This blueprint for "The Hero's Journey" gave Lucas the focus he needed to draw his sprawling imaginary universe into a single story.

Note that the Wachowski Brothers' wonderful film The Matrix is carefully built on the same blueprint:

If you are going to watch the 3 originals, I highly recommend the De-Specialized versions. Not sure if they have been mentioned here before, but to me they are by far the best, definitive ones to watch. Of course, they must be acquired through ...ahem...non-traditional channels. The quality is fantastic, and all of Lucas' '90's-2000's meddling left out.

They are all "done". Episode 4 seams to be finalized, but 5 and 6 are, as far as I can tell, in just as good a shape. I know he likes to keep tweaking them, so there may be more changes but the versions I watched were fantastic. I think I grabbed them and watched them last year.

They are all out, just in different states. 4 is on version 2.5, likely the last version, and is the highest quality. Episode 5 is on version 2.0, is extremly good quality and the final version will probably only tweak the audio a bit and add more language options. Episode 6 is on version 1.0 and is due for a big upgrade sometime soon, but even now it's still the best version of the original RotJ that you can find anywhere

Along with many things in that trailer, that split second shot at about 1:26 of the Storm Troopers taking a position behind some rubble with the X Wings approaching across the lake was freaking amazing.

This is going to set records on its way to a gazillion dollars.

Criminal Assault on Imperial Citizens (One Bar Patron killed one grievously wounded (Amputation of arm)

Damage to Imperial Military Property (Star Destroyer Collision while chasing known fugitives from Imperial Law)

Probably hundreds of thousands of innocent men and woman civilian contracts on the first Death Star

placing non uniform military agitators among civilian populations (Bespin), causing possible civillian casualties when the Empire tried to restore order.

Theft of Military Equipment, X-wing fighters, at least two storm trooper uniforms, at least one Military Shuttle, at least one speeder bike)

Encouraging open rebellion with indigenous primitive cultures.


Hiding rebel bases among civillian populations causing the death of several million innocents (Alderaan)

Cruelty to animals (Wampa Snow Creature is cruelly attacked by a so called Jedi)

Abuse of a corpse (One Taun Taun made into a cruel Buffalo Bill style skin dress)

The murder of several hundred thousand civillian contractors and construction workers aboard the Death Star II

The murder of a senior government official (Lord Vader)

Regicide (Emperor Palpatine)

Lets look at the positives that the Empire bought to the galaxy

The end of a corrupt senate

The end of the war with the Separatists

The establishment of a fair government

Lets not forget the forceful separation of religion and civil authority

The removal of Jar Jar Binks from Government

Improved resource development on Mustafar and Alderaan.
