The word IF is the key to that sentence.

Fixed broken link. I haven't seen this interview but it does appear to be getting a ton of eye balls one way or another

I watched it. It's about has soft of an interview you can get and as you would expect, Peterson didn't challenge him much. Which is fine actually, not every interview needs be a drill and there is a place for someone just being allowed to promote themselves.

I do hope that he takes on some more more challenging interviews though so we can get into the meat and potatoes of the ideas he has.

One thing I was wondering about is when he talks about doing things like withholding municipal funds for infrastructure to compel municipalities to expedite construction permits for housing. Is that even possible to do?

Interesting points about the liberals leaving themselves wide open to foreign interference. Crazy that they would allow pretty anybody to sign up and vote on this.

So that would likely mean an election on April 28 or May 5.
I think Singh will have maximum leverage at that point.

This new Prime Minister will really want to run on some record that is theirs and not Trudeau’s. So if he can extract more programs in exchange for 6 months he is doing his job.

I suspect the liberals will modify rules shortly for a pre March 24th vote. It would be foolish not to.

Sure it's possible. People accused the Liberals of using such tactics to strong arm the Calgary city council to change the zoning laws.

The effectiveness of such plans is a different question. You try to put a timeline on the funding because it helps kickstart projects. 'Move it or lose it' to get stuff built. But knowing it has an expiry date makes the NIMBY tactics more potent, because they only need to delay until the deadline passes and projects die. This is especially true if the funding is for things like low-income housing where the opposition has a lot more fervor.

Could lead to some creative funding options, but the timeline is the kicker. Promote TODs by pledging funding for transit and station upgrades that have 5000 units built within 250m. But within what timeframe to make the promise of the money worth it for either party?

Easiest would be to see what major projects are in limbo and see if funding can help push them across the line, which is basically just subsidizing developers to push certain projects over other ones. But cities tend to do that on their own less directly anyway, so it's probably the best way to get more brownfield developed.

Unfortunately we’ll never know as our future PM can’t get the required security clearance.

With who?

There is no longer a deal between the parties, and as I said, Singh reiterated today that he will vote to topple the government at first chance.

Its quite possible, maybe even probable, that the new leader wont even be in parliament when the spring session arrives for the throne speech. So who does Jagmeet make a deal with?

My assumption is the liberals will modify their leadership rules to have a leader prior to the 24th. If that wasn’t the plan why wouldn’t an election just been called today?

If we follow that assumption then Signhs statement today makes sense as he needs to appear like he will topple the government. This way when the new leader is elected and they sit down to negotiate confidence for the throne speech he has a strong position.

So to answer the question of who he will negotiate with, the new liberal leader.

Why would Singh negotiate with a new Liberal leader when he stated?

I see no way he survives politically if he backtracks to make another confidence deal with the Liberals. He would have zero integrity left.

He has, twice now, went out of his way and said "it doesn't matter who the new leader is...the Liberals must go". He may even lose support within the party if he goes down the road that reverses course now.

Shrug....I dunno....Im gonna take him on his word I guess because as much as I oppose his ideologue nonsense, I think he is a very decent man who thinks he is doing the right things.

Gonna be some twists and turns the next little while though...that is assured.

Because he could have supported the non-confidence vote in December twice and didn’t.

He didn’t do it the first time in December and the called for Trudeau to resign. Then Trudeau said he’d take the holidays
Then Singh says he will vote to bring down the government
Then PP proposes emergency motions to bring down the government
Singh does nothing
The Trudeau resigns and suspends Parliament
Singh says he will bring down government.

So why don’t believe Singh will take down the government when he had every chance to take down the government and only says he will bring down the government when he can’t bring down the government.

Your choices are Singh wanted his pension or he wants to extract more concessions as the most effective NDP leader since Tommy Douglas.

The mainstreams suggesting that a new Liberal Leader could be in place by March 15th. Gives them a week to adjust any rules, than a 60 day Leadership campaign. Some speculation that an election could be in the called by the first week of April.

Or was he the luckiest in terms of having two minority governments who needed his support?

I don't think he was a better leader than Jack Layton. He had timing and circumstance in his favor.

The NDP MPs better be sitting down with Singh right now to understand exactly what his plan is because if he backtracks, as you are suggesting, it will be devastating for any NDP candidate in the next election. How would voters be able to believe anything that comes from the NDP if he is the leader? It is possible that the NDP should be undertaking a leadership review as well ahead of the next election.

There has not been an opportunity for a confidence vote since Singh wrote that letter to Canadians though, because they haven't been sitting in the house since then. So since Singh stated what he did, no he has not had "every chance to take down the government"....he has had exactly none.

PP wanted an emergency session called to try and find a confidence vote, but nothing was available to do so.

So here we are. Parliament is shut down til the throne speech at the beginning of the spring session.....zero chance for a vote before that.

You can only play the hand you're dealt.

Was it a lucky hand he got? Sure. Could somebody have done better with it? Maybe. Would Jack Layton have been a more effective NDP leader if he triggered an election when the CPC wanted to?

The only people who are obsessed with Singh “keeping his word” about this issue would never have voted for the NDP anyway, so you can stop pretending it’s something you actually care about on any objective or moral ground.

We get it, CPC sycophants are mad. Get over it.

Trudeau stepping down would be right out of the UCP playbook.

Kenney steps down, and Satan's Fart version of Kenney takes over. They claim it's a whole new party and make a bunch of promises they know they can't keep. Spend four years doing whatever pops into your head.

Why wouldn't you emulate that, if it's a proven path to maintaining power?
