Imagine the CP meltdown if the Flames stroll to the podium

- And it's Cossa
Cue the comparisons to Mason McDonald comparisons immediately.

I don't know if Cossa and McDonald are really that comparable.
Cossa's stats during his draft year and the two prior years:
2019: 2.23 GAA and 92.1%
2020: 1.57 GAA and 94.1%
2021: 1.57 GAA and 94.1%
By the way, he's 6'6. And the Oil Kings have a track record of success with goalies at the NHL level.
Mason McDonald's stats during his draft year and the prior year (only played 1 prior year):
2012: 4.72 GAA and 88.5%
2013 (Acadie-Bathurst Titan): 3.57 GAA and 88.7%
2013 (Charlottetown Islanders): 3.35 GAA and 90.7% (this ended up being his best season in his entire career)
It's hard not to like Cossa's numbers. For McDonald, we had to do some major mental gymnastic to justify the pick. He was athletic, ranked highly, and showed signs of improvement. But at the end of the day, goaltending largely comes down to save percentage. And McDonald never, at any point, had a good save percentage.
To be fair, McDonald went 34th, so obviously he'd be worse than a projected 1st round goalie like Cossa. I'm undecided, but I might be in the minority that thinks Cossa could be a better prospect than Jesper Wallstedt. But the things Wallstedt has done at his age is very impressive.

So the question is
- Does someone slip
- Slip enough to the Flames
- And a guy they would like
I maintain that there are two slippage candidates: Edvinsson and Guenther. I think Wallstedt could also be there.
|
Chance that Guenther could slip.
He has the high numbers but in a short period of games for this year and is a winger.
I think that there could be teams looking at Sillinger, McTavish, and Lucius that figure they have just as much offensive talent and potential as Guenther and the fact that they play center means they are in a more coveted position.
No OHL and limited WHL with not everybody participating means that you cant just look at the numbers they had this year.

This will likely be the most unpredictable NHL draft ever.

With McDonald there were two goaltenders debated and pretty much even in the rankings ... the Flames got the wrong one.
But his save percentage isn't the stat to focus on when he's coming out of the Q. Just like gawdy offensive numbers for forwards, their goalies face a lot of offence.
He was 7th in the league in his +1 year at 18-19.

Okay, and Cossa was 1st in the league in save percentage during his draft year. Even ahead of Dustin Wolf, who was 2nd.
Last year, Cossa was 4th in save percentage.
As I stated in my post, McDonald was ranked highly, was considered to be athletic, and had seemed to be improving. But I hated the pick at the time, because Demko simply had better numbers (91.9% in NCAA). So did Vitek Vanecek (92.1%) and Alex Nedeljkovic (92.5%) across their various leagues.
But at the end of the day, save percentage actually seems to matter quite a bit when drafting out of the CHL. There's evidently a strong correlation between save percentage and NHL performance. Yes, the Q tends to be less defensive than the WHL, but that the Q as a whole doesn't seem to develop many goalies or defensemen anymore. It's amazing how almost every elite (or formerly elite) goalie in the league had 92% in their draft year.

Well nobody is saying that save percentage doesn't matter ... I'm just saying it doesn't play well across leagues.
Clearly they picked the wrong guy.

I just realised Cole Sillinger's coach and GM in Sioux Falls is none other than Flames legend Marty Murray!
