CFL bashers confuse me. If you don't like it, fine, don't watch it. But so many seem to get personally offended that the league exists and that other people like it. I just dont understand how it becomes such a passionate hatred.

I follow and enjoy both, and I know I've said it numerous times, but if it were CFL rules with NFL talent, I'd be in sports heaven.

I'm pretty new to CP and I've had some time to kill so I went through a bunch of this thread (jumped from about page 25 to 60 though.)

I like the idea of a joint stadium for the Stamps and Flames (and MLS in the future.) As such, I also think that the re-development of the UofC lands which currently house McMahon Stadium, Norma Bush arena, the athletic park, ball diamond, volley-dome and tennis courts would be a good location for the new stadium. I think opposition from the surrounding communities would be a big hurdle though. The area has a number of pro's and con's. LRT access is good, but traffic flow can be quite bad (based on current Stamps games.) It is outside of the downtown core though.

One concept that I have in mind that could be somewhat interesting (maybe not technically feasible) would be a stacked stadium situation. Essentially, you would bury a lower dome under the football field level which would contain the NHL ice surface. You could try to configure the field seating such that it would provide sight line to the ice level via a moving or opening floor.

Another idea for additional suites would be to put a set of suites at ice level. They would be configured similar to the current suites at the Dome with two or three rows of seating and a suite behind with lower bowl seating rising above the suites. The new AT&T/Cowboys Stadium has that type of configuration and I think it would be pretty cool for hockey.

With regards to site selection I wonder if anything could be done in the west Bridgeland area? If the land could be purchased or annexed the area north of Memorial and east of Edmonton Trail seems like a good home for a sports complex. LRT access is available plus there are various rumours and thoughts that a North LRT could potentially run up Edmonton Trail. The land provides easy access in and out of the downtown core and the road infrastructure is reasonable. The new bridge from East Village would obviously allow the future, dense population easy access to the facilities. The area is growing in trendiness and a stadium development would probably really help the area from a retailer/entertainment/commercial view.

Maybe Eau Claire mall would be a good place for a stadium. The location would be pretty ideal although you'd really be limited to just building a Saddledome replacement due to space. There wouldn't be any room for surface parking either so the organization would have to look at building underground parking. Eau Claire needs some life and I've seen a re-development plan but I doubt that will happen.

The ice levels suits is a really good idea actually. MSG has something similar, but it's only a handful of them at centre ice, and it's not up to the boards, so you can't see the play since it's underneath seating.

Ice level seating isn't really that attractive anyways, in my opinion, because the sight lines can be pretty bad especially right near the benches or the penalty box. The ice level section would be better served with suites where it is more of a social experience.

I always believe there is a bigger blue print that involves a lot of stakeholders in building a stadium here in Calgary. I am not sure if the future site for the Flames will be at Foothills Park 'cos the land could be expensive to acquire. But a McMahon retrofit is long overdue...and then the south Soccer Centre, the Rugby Headquarters, the Saddledome....and all those conversations.

I hope Calgary doesn't miss the boat this time just like the Women's World Cup bid.

Cfl is like Tim Hortons coffee.

Lots of people swallowing a subpar product and defending it vehemently on the basis of traditionalism and faux patriotism.

In the case of Tim's it's good because it keeps people out of drive thru lines at other places. In the CFL case it's bad because it inundates the rest of us with highlights and news on TSN and sports talk radio just like the Blue Jays and Raptors.

It's a bush league and a blemish on a country that otherwise has everything in the world to be proud of.

Do the Austrians or Swiss make fun of their local professional soccer league because it's inferior to the German league? No

Do the Finns and Swedes make fun of their local pro hockey leagues because they're inferior to the KHL? No

Do American Soccer fans make fun of the MLS because it's inferior to the Mexican league (they're pretty close these days, but the Mexican league is still considered superior)? No

Why is it that some Canadians hate the CFL with a passion? It makes no sense. Yes, the it's inferior in talent to the NFL, nobody's denying that. But it feels more genuine for a Calgary born and raised fan to passionately support a Calgary based football team with 60 years of history, hate on Edmonton and Saskatchewan based teams than it does for that person to randomly pick Miami or Indianapolis as their favorite team and follow them passionately. Not saying Canadians can't like the NFL, I'm not even saying they can't like it more than the CFL, but for God's sake.... leave the CFL and its fans alone.

I think the hate towards to CFL is a bit weird, but at the same time I find it even weirder that people can like the CFL and not like the NFL. It's like saying you like the KHL but not the NHL. Yes there are slight rule differences and the field dimensions are bigger, but football is fundamentally football. The NFL, undeniably, has the best football players in the world. I think the people who like the CFL but not the NFL are doing so for purely patriotic reasons, which is really bizarre considering the CFL is made up of at least 50% American born players.

I have no issues with the CFL, it's enjoyable for what it is, but if you like the game of football, I really have no idea how you can watch the CFL and not want to watch the NFL.

So where would you suggest people go if they'd like to see some live football played at a reasonably high level (which it is)?

The CIS is unwatchable. Local minor football like the Colts is worse.

So our options are to make a road trip to Seattle or take in an NCAA game? Or shall we just not watch live football in Canada?

I will say this regarding people that don't like the NFL but like the CFL. The NFL, in many ways, is a very difficult entity to like if you're not an enthusiastic football fan. Players are in the news for the wrong reasons all the time, every little thing is blown up into a circus. Every year, some high profile player holds out for more millions.

The CFL, conversely, is made up of a bunch of guys who spend the off season climbing the ranks of TD management and the like.

I love football. So I forgive the transgressions, but I can definitely see why people in another country with no rooting interest in the NFL are put off by it.

I think the CFL is more fun to watch, as it is more wide open, and I understand the nuances of the game better, but nothing compares to seeing an NFL game live.

Well, we'd be fine if wasn't for the regular scheduled CFL bashing by Canadians who don't like it. God, those guys have to say that crap in every thread that even comes remotely close to being about the CFL.

So annoying.

They're like vegans of sports of fans. How do you know if someone is Canadian and an NFL fan? Don't worry, they'll tell you how much the CFL sucks at every opportunity.
