I was not wrong about the Risebrough-Gilmour contract talks, you are. Gilmour's arbitration talk were bitter and didn't get the results he wanted. An impasse hit, Gilmour took the stance he wouldn't play for the team again and went to the sidelines. The Flames panicked and put Gilmour to market. Fletcher (now with the Leafs) jumped at the deal.

I hope the Flames don't torch Geaudreau like they did Gilmour.
There's one difficulty with what you say.

The Flames' ‘down’ year after winning the Cup was '89-90. That year, as it happens, though they did not win the President's Trophy, they finished 2nd overall, two points back of the Bruins.

The Gilmour arbitration did not happen until the summer of 1991. As a result of arbitration, Gilmour had a valid contract for 1991-92, but he walked out on the team in mid-season and demanded a trade.

The ‘down’ year and the Gilmour walkout had absolutely nothing to do with one another.

OK, back to lurking and waiting for news.

Ok. Say he does just that and in game 45 takes a massive head shot that puts him out for the rest of the year. He's then out Millions and millions of dollars.

8 years, $7.625m AAV

Expensive, but buys 3 years of UFA and gets Johnny and Mony on the books for exactly $15m.

That's 2/2 that Gaudreau and his family have dragged out a contract negotiations longer then it needs to be.
I take it as a good sign. Shows he has good support and accountability to his family. For a guy like Gaudreau, the only real risk to reaching his potential (besides injury), are situations when a young player can't handle the transition to being a professional athlete. Setoguchi is a good example of that.

In this case, the fact that the ties to his family appear to be so close, relieves alot of risk that this could happen. Mama Gaudreau ain't taking no guff from Johnny no matter if he's cleaning chimneys or making 7 million dollars as a pro hockey player.

Ideally, the family is always involved to a certain extent. But not sure meeting with the GM and President when the player is still a hold out a week before the season is the level of involvement you'd hope for.

To me, that signals a high level of frustration from the family, and potentially concerns that their son is not being treated well.

I'm not sure how this kind of involvement has effected relationships with players through history, but I recall ROR and Lindros situations both had heavy parental involvement. Are their others that would indicate a more positive outcome?

Whatever happens, it's a bad situation. If he says he's happy, it's a lie. If it's rumoured to be going well, it's not. Family meeting the GM, bad sign. Insiders saying they're getting close means its not done yet, thats a bad sign too. If be signs a contract, thats the worst possible outcome for everyone!

I have it on good authority that the sky is indeed falling. Be affraid, be very affraid!

To me that strikes me as the family and player having little confidence in the agent and the representation being given. If there was greater trust in the agent (and strategy being employed) then the family would not feel the need to get involved.

Further, it seems public sentiment is starting to shift away from the player and towards the organization. From my observation that is tied to the way the agent is playing this. Fans in a hockey market are aware of the Lindros situation and want nothing to do with it. Again, it raises questions about the representation of the player.

Perhaps the best solution is for the player to seek alternate agency?

Have you fired your Realtor before?
You can't fire a Player Agent, unless there is a Breach of Contract. Or maybe you can, but it won't be without a Financial Penalty?

Which would make sense if you expected Gaudreau to be a robot locked to mathematical sequence.
