While I agree with infrastructure spending, I do question if an arena is a wise choice.

1) Will there be a lot of people (and companies) willing or able to spend money on expensive entertainment?
2) At what point will events with 20 000 people in one place be allowed and even if it's allowed, at what point will people feel comfortable going to that kind of setting?
3) What will travel restrictions look like going forward?

I think we need to pull in the reigns here a bit on the hypothetical day after coronavirus is finally history.

There's going to be a vaccine well before the opening day of the new arena. And I don't think corona is gonna change people interest in sports and entertainment overall. There's still gonna be a strong demand for live sports, concerts, and the like. And there will be a market who will be able to afford going to these events on the regular. Professional sports will still be able to fill stadiums as they have been up to this year.

If any negative drawback from this for pro sports is to happen, it may temporarily lower ticket prices for a period of time. But as demand naturally increases, the prices will as well.

We're not suggesting these outcomes are at all likely or even probable, but they cannot be dismissed at impossible.

It's like proceeding with a plan to build a new house on a riverbank that is currently flooding, the water has not yet even reached it's peak level, and there are nothing but storm clouds in the 7 day forecast. We don't know the state of the riverbank when the waters do recede, and we can't be certain when another flood may happen. The next pandemic may not be quite as inevitable as another flood...but then again we are literally planning to build an arena in floodplain.


There have been lasting effects from 9/11 - mainly related to security measures for travel and large events. It's not insane to speculate that there could be long-lasting consequences from this, too. A vaccine is likely, but not guaranteed (mutations? perhaps it is a guessing game like influenza). We also don't have any idea what 'recovery' looks like for a place like NYC.

Life will certainly find a 'new normal'. How it is differs from our 'old normal' in the near-mid term is certainly a live debate. Whether we ever get fully back to the 'old normal' is also a question. Imagine time traveling back to 1999 and getting on an international flight (or vice-versa)...it would be weird and shocking. We know this is largely a numbers game - I don't think it's that crazy to wonder if the numbers game might be the persistent issue out of all of this?

This isn't the first, nor the last pandemic that mankind will likely encounter. The Spanish Flu is a one that's getting a lot of reference lately, which was 100 years ago, and the amount of crowds for sporting events back then is significantly less than what is it right now. After that one, which wiped out anywhere from 17 million to 50 million world, people still gathered in large crowds after the fact. The last two relevant pandemics for Canadians that happened was SARS and H1N1, and business operated as usual during and after those two.

I have full confidence that once this passes, people will be comfortable in gathering together in big crowds once again, because people gathering at sporting events itself wasn't the cause of the spreading of this pandemic. This is an event that is outside the realm of control for the concept of crowds at live entertainment. 20,000 crowds - 80,000 crowds is not a dangerous risk itself.

The measures we're taking to keep away from each other and stay home is a shock to the system, but it's not going to become the new norm. Less crowds at gathering events I don't believe is going to be the outcome of this. People want to live, have fun, and gather.

And in relation to your 9/11 analogy, arguably there should be less people flying/traveling now due to fear of possibly being a very low chance of hijacking. I would assume there are stats that indicates people have never travelled more than before by flight.

Slightly OT, but the BMO expansion design has been released. Going to be just down the street from the new arena.

Yeah, I kind of wish it was white or something a little lighter. There are already enough shades of Dead-grass Brown in this city.

How sick would it look to have this as is and then the arena be white with glass and light wood (like the library) to contrast but compliment each other? Between this building, the arena, NMC, the library, renovated Arts Commons and Glenbow, that whole area will truly become an epic destination.

Oof, that "North elevation" view. This design doesn't play nice with the current BMO facade.

Also, not a fan of the "East" view either considering that's going to be the main view we'll have coming out of the new arena. Kind of a shopping mall parkade esthetic there.

Agreed. The current BMO Centre is absolutely hideous. Hopefully the design of the new Stampede LRT Station further diverts attention away from the BMO Centre's facade.

Regarding the arena. It isnt scrapped, its a go. I heard of who the general contractor is, but conflicting reports on whether they break ground spring of 2021 or plan on starting after Stampede 2021.

Watching the morning news, looks like HOK and DIALOG will be designing the new arena. I don't know a ton about architects, but I've at least heard of HOK and word is Little Caesars is top notch. And it's nice to see a local firm involved.
