No matter what way you look at it, it looks like a great center is going to be available to the flames as long as they draft top 6 or so.

If the Flames can't get mackinnon or Barkov... they should go for volume at C...
Monahan/Lindholm
Max Domi
Nic Petan
then hope for the best

I have to ask: Is it worth going off the board at 5/6 to pick Mohanon/Lindholm? Or is the russian worth the risk? (if he drops to 5/6)

Loading up down the middle is never a bad idea. Centremen can easily be moved to the wing. Going the other way is almost impossible.

Question: what makes someone a natural center or right/left wing?

I am a fan of Nichuskin and think he is very talented but he is way too much of a risk for the Flames to take.
This will be an important pick for them and a key in determining how long this rebuild may take so if they blow it on a guy that wants to stay in Russia for awhile then they are hooped.
As much as I think the guys after the top 3 are a step down and Nichuskin is more talented I think you go with Monahan or Lindholm at 5/6.

I agree with the stock up at center strategy. If we can't get MacKinnon, take Monahan but support that pick with Gauthier. Monahan at 6'2, Jankowski at 6'4 and Gauthier at 6'5? Me likey. Then you take a late 1st round flier on a player like Mantha, a 6'4 RW. B ring the size to support our small skilled guys.

Defensive responsibilities, and the ability to drive the rush back down to the other end of the ice to set up the wingers for a scoring chance. Centers are kind of like quarterbacks.

You guys do know there are seven rounds to the draft right? Another sorely depleted position is RW which I think the Flames will try to address with one of the Pitt or St.L first rounders. I repeat myself a ton here but if the Flames are going to take flyers on other centers outside of the first round, would like them to take a look at Yakimov. Big kid, and looks to be a late bloomer. Is a project but worth a look.
Idealy I hope the Flames grab a C with their own first rounder, and a D and RW with the Pitt and St.L picks.

Absolutely. It's inexcusable that there are no 1st rounders in any of those positions in the Flames' prospect pool (not counting Jankowski, he's just too far away still). This draft is a real chance to change that.

I think you've got two tiers in the upper part of the first round:
Top tier - Jones, MacKinnon, Drouin, Barkov
2nd Tier - Nurse, Zadarov, Lindholm, Monohan
The Russian is probably 1st tier talent from what I've read but too much of a question mark at this point.
Once you get past 4 or 5 (depending on the Russian) you could take any of those other four in the 2nd tier without it being going 'off the board'.

If you're no going to count Jankowski then we would have had 2 picks in the first round since 2009, one of those picks not used for the position you want. That pick was Sven Baertschi, no one would want to change that. The other was Erixon who refused to sign with us - that's not our fault.
I don't see your logic?

I'm thinking back further than that. When's the last time a 1st rounder made any sort of impact in the Flames' lineup? I think that's why we all love Baertschi so much, it's such a breath of fresh air to be able to get excited about a top pick for once.

Strange comment. So you arbitrarily exclude Jankowski and Backlund to make your argument? Doesn't really make any sense.

I am ashamed to admit I forgot Backlund was a 1st rounder.

Our best offensive centre is a former 1st pick. He's an impact player for us.
