I think they were more based on GM's cruise. The show came out after this was shown.

The Tesla Model 3 was supposed to be a $35k price point car which explains it's spartan interior. In typical Tesla fashion of overpromising and under-delivering that price point was never really realized and that spartan interior was retained to increase profits.

There are model 3's available from Tesla stores near me for $37,830 right now, which would be 30,330 after tax credit. That seems close enough to count.

And there are some state credits too. In California, you can get a Model 3 for $29K. And families earning less than $90K or so could get one for about $23K after rebates. Throw in the fuel savings (even at California's insane electricity costs it's about 50% savings vs gas) and it's a pretty attractive option for people who drive a fair bit.

I've rented a few Tesla's now, and have to say I quite like the clean, minimalist interiors.

I'll take that over something like this any day

When you consider the average new vehicle sales price is close to $50,000 I'm not sure what people are expecting for "affordable". If looking at 5 year cost of ownership a $35,000 ev is almost unbeatable even without incentives.

If Western countries don't speed up they may be in for a bumpy ride.

Q2 in China ramping up even faster for vehicles

https://twitter.com/user/status/1670889122142076929

Worth noting that this is all vehicles, not just electric cars, so all of that growth is electric cars. They may be VW and a Tesla cars (among other brands), but a lot of the profit and all of the labour is Chinese. And China is notorious for stealing IP and selling the same stuff.

They all need to bring back buttons and physical interactions. Fiddling around with a touchscreen is not safe while driving.

(This is not exclusively an electric vehicle issue, but the single giant screen doesn't help)

I actually don't have a lot of complaints about the minimalist Tesla interior but if you have to wear gloves in the winter is a real pain in the ass. Even with touchscreen gloves it can be a pain in the ass selecting music or changing the temperature. You are forced to take your eyes off the road to ensure you are pressing the right area of the screen.

Elon Musk pledges Tesla to China’s 'core socialist values' to avert EV price war

https://interestingengineering.com/t...cialist-values

China’s government has solicited a truce among its top EV manufacturers, with Elon Musk’s Tesla being the only foreign firm to sign the joint letter committing to the country’s “core socialist values”.

the “socialist” CEO has committed to reducing abnormal pricing and ending the “reckless” EV price war to maintain its presence in the cut-throat EV market in China.

The Twitter CEO had to refrain from tweeting during his recent visit to China as the text-based application is banned in the country.

With the Chinese market contributing enormously to Tesla's profitability, representing one-third of its annual sales, it is perhaps not surprising that Musk has made a commitment to ensuring fair competition within the communist country, given that this is what the Chinese government wants the company to do.

The main problem I read was that were rampant price wars and consumers were revolting because you could buy an EV one day and see the price dropped 15% the next week.

Of course the other subtext is that government is trying to get Tesla not to undercut their domestic EV producers to protect their marketshare.

"Toyota claims it has made a technological breakthrough that will eventually lead to a solid-state battery capable of delivering up to 745 miles (1,199 kilometers) of range, all while completely recharging in 10 minutes, according to The Guardian, quoting Keiji Kaita, president of the company’s research and development center for carbon neutrality."

Bold claim...

EV's are great and all until something like this occurs.

What's the difference between EVs and gas cars in that case? If traffic is backed up for hours and you can't charge you also can't fill your car. Keep your car relatively charged or full.

I'd rather have an ev than a gas vehicle after a hurricane.

1) They use almost no power when "idling" if stuck on a freeway
2) As you plug in your EV every night when you get home they're far more likely to be "full" when a disaster hits than a gas vehicle
3) If I know a hurricane is coming I can plug in at home vs lining up for hours at the gas stations to fill up
4) When the electrical grid goes down gas pumps don't work either
5) some EVs can power your home as back up

This is not a serious concern. EVs are better suited for this than gas vehicles

What a dumb argument.

I can generate my own electricity if I decide to be over-prepared. I can't make my own gas at home.

They have things that convert gas into electricity too if you really want.

I wonder how much gas it would take to fully charge an EV with a little Honda generator?
