Draft picks are at their lowest value at the trade deadline and at their highest value at the draft.
Manage the assets accordingly. Spending significant assets to trade up in this draft is a risky strategy and could bite us in the a$$
Low to moderate overpay is ok. Taking a wild swing to get in the top 10 seems very risky.

I think the only way the Flames get themselves a top 5 pick is to come by it naturally and suck their way into it.
Given that has only happened once in franchise history, I’m not holding my breath.
…..or a lottery win.

One can dream. The 4th OV seems more within reach this year because of who is there and the weaker class. Hagens, Desnoyers, Frondell seem more likely to be good 2nd line Cs than top line guys - or at least their likelihood of being top line C is lower than regular top 5 picks.
Rasmus is also a bona fidelity no3 guy (on a contending team) playing on the right side that aren't easy to find. Add in a young top 6 forward like Zary.
Zary is a young top 6 player. If he spikes, he can be a 2C or 1LW. Otherwise, he seems like he's 1.5 shoes in to at least be a 2LW.

Trading Coleman to Dallas for 2026 or 2027 1st would be great. Then I would be interested in if Backlund wants to go to a contender at the deadline then potentially come back on 1 or 2 yr deals.

I don't see any chance the Flames trade Coleman during the off-season,
Maybe at trade deadline, if they are way out of it
My guess, there is not allot of change to the lineup,
Andersson is traded, my guess he has asked to be moved
Look to acquire a couple centers, one is a depth center, 13th forward or AHLer

Sure but I’m Utah, why am I talking to the Flames about Andersson when I could be talking to the Sabres about Byram?

The other question, if Utah were interested (i.e. not for the 4OA)
Would Andersson resign with them,
Not sure he would

Anderson won't return a top 10 pick, let alone top 5.
That would be absolute robbery.

Didn’t Dallas trade their next 3 1st rounders this year? 25 for Granlund/Ceci and 26+27 for Rantanen?

The stars have to trade Marchment and Dumba to make cap space to fill the roster. They probably get very little for them, Dumba might cost them a pick.
I'd take both and trade Rasmus and Coleman 50% RS and see what I can get.

Yes, 0 chance we get 4OV without a pick going back and it's even less likley if he won't re-sign.
The other ting about 4Ov is sometimes teams take players out of order.
NYI takes Schaefer
SJ takes Martone
Chi takes Hagens
Utah takes Misa
Now you got the 2nd rated players 4th. Risk to move that pick now and I owuld not be shocked if that is how it goes.

Thing is you have insiders on the board saying Coleman is starting the season here. So the point is moot.

Why wouldn't they consider trading him?
We have an abundance of wingers, without even considering any prospects making the team:
Huberdeau-Kadri-Sharangovich
Zary-Frost-Coronato
Farabee-Backlund-Klapka
Lomberg-xxxxx-Pospisil

My guess, Flames consider him to be their #1 shutdown winger.

I think the Flames would move Coleman if they get the value they want but won’t trade him for the sake of it. Dallas doesn’t have the cap for him

Scoring Winger

I think they value having Coleman around for leadership. My guess is they only move him if he states he wants to go to a contender

I doubt trading Coleman is even on the radar. He has two seasons left, is a veteran presence the Flames like, he fills a role they dont have anyone else to fill, and he as a modified no trade. They also dont need the cap space and their winger depth isnt great.
If he wants out, a great offer is put on the table, or they are out by the deadline, then that changes things. Even then I think this is a 2026 summer conversation at the earliest.

Reading that the Wild want the futures for Rossi to move that for an upgrade at C. Exactly why we shouldn’t be trading for him but stockpiling picks to have ammo to beat other teams offers.
What a tragedy it would be to give them the assets to get a player better than Rossi.

I wonder if they’re going for Pettersson? Maybe grab Boeser to play with him too.
