I think what bothers me most about that commercial is that they are literally treating their car like a piece of meat. It's a disposable commodity...which I guess is what the new Jetta is, but that seems like a crappy way to refer to your product. The only thing worse is if they are were at a department store in the appliance section.

Then it would have been a Toyota Corolla or Camry commercial.

Unfortunately that's exactly what a Jetta is now too. VW took out all the things that made it good, made it bigger, slashed the price by 5k, and called it a day. And they are selling like crazy.

Can't fault them for making good business decisions. They finally came around an realized that Americans are fat and want a big unassuming, unexiting car and it's paid off for them. A sporty little sedan in European clothing just isn't going to sell big to American families. Look at the Mazda 6. Always been more exciting to own and drive than Accords and Camry's yet Americans don't buy them. Build them big and boring and they will come.

Not surprised these ads were already mentioned.
"We're going to fill this car with smelly junk, but this tiny air freshener is going to completely mask it so that these totally neutral and complete strangers who aren't paid actors will pretend the car smells like an ocean breeze."
There are bad commercials, there are stupid commercials, and there are commercials that insult the viewer's intelligence. This is in the latter, and usually causes me to boycott the product.
As a rule, I hate any commercial that involves testimonials or every day people being "surprised" because they are obvious BS. The current Scotiabank one is a good example. Hey, lets follow this woman who totally does not expect that she's about to win a free mortgage (or whatever it is). Wont she be shocked when she gets home? Except, there is a bloody cameraman visibly taping her as she pulls into the driveway and she pretends to be clueless about what is happening well after.. The "surprised customer" gimmick sort of fails when you break the fourth wall.

I think it was a good short/medium term business decision, but in the long-term it will hurt them a bit IMO because it waters down their brand. Their whole brand cache is being a quirky european product who does things a bit differently. Lose that, and you become just like everyone else.
I think its the same issue with BMW. People wanted to buy their cars because they offered something special and a certain level of cache. Now that they have 50 kinds of cars/SUVS/crossovers/hunchbacked crossovers etc. and pretty much everyone and their dog drives a BMW, it's kind of lost the appeal of what BMW used to mean. They are raking it in, but in the long-term it's going to hurt their brand and they probably won't be able to sell cars for what they used to.

I think being a butcher helps with that volkwasgen advert, the 'yea that's nice' line at the end kinda does things to me - she's the customer you push your buddies out of the way to serve...
and hey it's good to see a proper serving butcher shop on the screen - remind people how meat should be bought!!

I don't even know what smallenfreuden is supposed to mean. I mean, wtf? Visa makes such good commercials usually too. Are we supposed to know the meaning of "freuden"? Why borrow a word/phrase from quite possibly the ugliest sounding language on Earth? The whole campaign boggles my mind.

I have a real hate on for that Oil Change commercial out now, with the loser with butterflys attached to his hat, and the know-it-all who changes oil for a living (probably a crappy commercial actor for a living)....
But they're just awful
"My mind was just blown....."
"Wasn't Hard"
and
"Can you catch my friend Boris?"
"Noooooo"
Just awful!
