How can you know that with any certainty? The Flames just got 2 very very good young Cs. They both have a high compete, think the game at a very high level and play well on both sides of the puck. Reschny was putting up McKenna numbers in the WHL playoffs, while Potter is one of the most dynamic skaters in the draft. Both were the BPA at the time of the pick, and they easily push the Flames' prospect pool to the top ⅓rd of the NHL.

Both players' only downside is being 5'10". If anything this draft gives me hope that the Flames manage to replicate Dallas' and Carolina's success. Potter in particular looked like a Carolina pick.

The Flames are in a position where they can exploit what appeared to be some market inefficiencies in this 1st round.

It wasn't long ago that 5'10" Brayden Point put up 33 points in 23 playoff games.
The most effective player in the Stanley Cup finals this past season was 5'9" Brad Marchand.

As much as people like to focus on the Panthers size and grit they are ignoring the actual reason they won which is they broke a modern record for goals scored in a playoff and had one of the most skilled lineups in the salary cap era with almost 3 lines playing at a point per game in the playoffs.

To me Reschny didn't look small at all either, he was taller than Lanny on the draft stage, and his combine measurements were 5'11" and 180lbs

Potter measured 5'10" and 172 lbs at the combine.

Neither guy is big, but they aren't tiny.

To me weight has a huge part to play in it. Reschny will have a playing weight around 190 to 195. Thats damn solid.
Potter will probably be around 180 but when you watch him him you see the game is built on movement, too much extra weight probably not a benefit nor would it be easy to pack a lot of weight on that frame.

Great post, Ash. Teams seem to be focussing on size right now because Vegas was a big team and there’s a perception that Florida is a big team because they played a big team game.

But oddly enough, Florida was one of the smaller teams by weight and pretty average height teams over the last two years according to this.

They won because they had more skill and more compete and were willing to relentlessly punish the teams they played against.

Size is important in a physical game like hockey, but teams collectively seem to be prioritizing it over skill and compete, and Calgary seems to be taking advantage of this.

Potter and Reschny meet for the first time and what are the first things they say to each other?
"Pumped."
"Yeah, I know right? So excited."
Meanwhile, people are trying to analyze their expressions to see if they're upset about being drafted by the Flames.

On some level, they might eventually be competing for the same roster spot.

Usually after day one there’s at least one guy that everyone expects is just a wasted pick, but I think everyone picked in the first round actually has a decent chance to be an important player for their teams. Maybe scouting is getting better? At least in this one it seems like the talent concentrated at the top more so than usual.

Edmonton had no pick. There's your answer.
