Even if he signs, I doubt they make him the captain. And I doubt he'd want it.

Yeah Tkachuk is more vocal in post game interviews than Johnny is. I doubt Johnny wants that spotlight. Besides you want your captain to wear Flames attire in post game interviews.
You just have to look up north. Just because you're the best scorer, doesn't make you the best leader.

I don't disagree with any of those things.
I just think Johnny seems like a different person than he was a year ago.

Maybe Johnny wants to wait and sign when he's leading the league.
Currently fourth in points, second in assists.
And recently scoring big time game winning/sealing goals.
Just wow.

He has almost no reason to sign now. It's in his best interests to see whats out there in free agency unless he is dead set on staying in Calgary, which I doubt.

Maybe he had doubts a year ago. Then Darryl came on board.
And look where he is now, where the team is now.
Hopefully JG carries his play deep into the playoffs.
You have to think that leaving would be a very difficult decision for him.

He's the star player on a very successful team and is turning 29. How many top teams have the $9+ million it will take to sign him? Is this the point in his career where he wants to return to Philly? They are a mess right now, and will all but guarantee that he never gets a chance to compete for a cup in his prime. The Flames have also been very good to him. Took a chance on him when other teams passed due to his size. Have brought up various old friends of his. Are letting him play his game and surrounded him with complimentary talent.
I think he has a lot of reasons to stay in Calgary.

I still think we will sign Johnny, just be nice to get it done and out of the way. Not having it floating around as a negative distraction kind of sucks.

I have 0 insight or knowledge on what is going on with his deal. Nor do I actually have a thought on whether I think we'll get him signed or not (I have emotions about it, lol), I can see it finishing both ways.
What I wondered though, and this kind of sucks, is could him signing, and the announcement of that signing (and the term / dollar amount) actually be more of a distraction for this team that is ticking along so well. Unfortunately, we have a few key players needing new contracts soon as well. Once Johnny's numbers announced (assuming we signed him), how much reverse math starts going on with others like Tkachuk, Mangiapane who need new deals, others on one year deals, and maybe others with existing contracts (like say a Monahan)? Which could result in feelings of "well there's not as much as I'd hoped left for me", or, "I guess they have to move me out to make room for everyone" right in the middle of one of our best regular seasons, where the whole key to success has been the team first and tight knit dynamic.
I'm sure that's not going to stop the Flames doing a deal because I'm sure they want it done, but I actually wonder if getting it done and knowing the number is actually worse for the team heading into the playoffs vs. where we stand now.

What did trade deadline have to do with anything? With the season going as it has he was never being moved (even if we made that choice, he'd neuter the return with a 5 team trade list).
Our hope is that he signs an 8 year deal with us before on or after July 1st rather than signing 7 years with any other team.

It’s absolutely imperative that the Flames re-sign both Gaudreau and Tkachuk.
To illustrate my point, I just had a look at the game logs and the top line has generated points/goals in every game this season except 5. So, that’s 50 games out off 55 where the top line has figured into the scoring in some way. That’s just absurd.
What does Darryl always say? It’s a 3-2 or 2-1 league? Must be nice to have a trio that contributes towards that goal basically 90% of the time. Losing any one of Tkachuk, Gaudreau or Lindholm is not an option. This organization must do anything and everything in their power to get this trio back together next season.

We've stayed in touch with his representatives and we'll deal with that quietly and away from the spotlight."

Try to finalize a new contract after the playoffs. Keep Gaudreau as hungry as possible to perform when it matters the most.

I think the only sure thing right now is that neither Johnny or Tkachuk are getting traded at the deadline.
Johnny may walk for nothing, but we aren't trading him now. We are all in.
