Not saying we SHOULD trade him, but if someone is willing to give you a 1st + you have to seriously consider it. Huberdeau, Weegar, Kadri. Backlund - These guys can mentor.

Sure, you just can’t be annoyed when doesn’t move cause no team would be offering a 1st

Ultimately getting too old of veterans or not getting them quick enough is a key reason I think Ottawa is stuck in their rebuild and unable to get themselves out of the basement. I think Edmonton and Buffalo suffered similar issues.
I agree getting value for guys who won’t be around or will be too old when the team is ready to contend makes a lot of sense but there is something for keeping good vets around which is why I think the Flames last rebuild went fairly smoothly in terms of bottoming out and returning to the playoffs (they even looked like a contender for a couple years)

not sure what that guy is on about...the very top end dman will make 9,10,11M+ especially starting next season and beyond
Hanifin is a 7.5 range all day long...here or elsewhere, you can set your watch to it

Perhaps I worded it wrong. Dom doesn't try to project the next contract, but attempts to quantify a player's level of play using production and analytics. His model shows that this season Hanifin is playing like a $5.9M defenseman. Last year it was around $7.8M, mostly because of better analytics/defense under Sutter.
I wasn't attmpting to predict the market, but Dom's numbers usually match my eye test, and are a quick reference for me. I'm sure someone will pay Hanifin with a number starting with a 7. At the same time, I don't think it will be a great signing unless Hanifin takes another step in improving his game.

Sure, I'm not annoyed and wouldn't trade him just "because", if he doesn't move he doesn't move.
But he's got the most points on the Flames and a contending team could see value in a proven cup winner who plays hard PK minutes and is putting up points.

I don't think that's a big enough deal to not get maximum value out of the player asset that is Hanifin. Especially since the lottery odds don't change drastically. 6.0% where they are vs 8.5% if they dropped to 5th worst
Keeping the good younger players and drafting well around them is how you prevent it from Being a failed rebuild.
People still complain about the Iginla and Bouwmeester returns but seemingly want to do the same thing "Just trade them for a 1st and a B Prospect"
|
If the Flames move the 3 UFA’s I suspect the Wild and the Sabres pass them. Outside shot that the Blue Jackets do. The bottom 4 teams seem locked and loaded barring a late season run to mediocrity from the Sens. Barring winning the lottery, picking somewhere between 5th and 8th will garner them a good player. There are a number of good dmen that are projected to go around that spot with a few good forwards. I personally would not mind a dman at that spot given organizational depth. If they get another 1st or two in the trades it would be later in the first round and there are a number of forwards that should be available between 20-32 in the draft.

Backlund, Weegar, Huberdeau, and Kadri can “mentor” them. If you get an offer involving picks or prospects just take it.
That’s so overrated anyway. Who mentored Crosby? Good thing the Kings had Ryan Smyth because otherwise Kopitar would have never amounted to anything?

Pittsburgh signed Recchi as well to help mentor Crosby. They wanted to avoid putting the weight of the franchise on an 18 year old.

Mario took an active role in mentoring Crosby. I thought that was pretty common knowledge. Pretty sure he even lived with him at the start.

Let’s draft a Crosby first. Then I can be persuaded into signing a Recchi.

Yes, Crosby lived with Lemieux at the start of his career.

Only played together for a little in Mario's last season.
But he also lived with Mario for his first 5 seasons. So maybe not on-ice mentorship, definitely TONS of teaching off the ice.

Well, I’ll be. You’re right. Lemieux played 26 games that one year.

Yeah Crosby lived with Mario.
They also signed Gonchar to give Malkin a veteran Russian player to mentor him.
As well as bringing in Mark Recchi, and John Leclair as mentors for the young players on that team.
So Pittsburgh is actually the perfect example of a team bringing in some veterans to help the young guard develop in the NHL.

Lots of players don’t (that I’m aware of, anyway) and do just fine. Kopitar is going to the hall of fame. Who did MacKinnon live with?
The point is that if someone comes calling for one of our 25+ players, deal them. The four I mentioned aren’t going anywhere. And it’s so easy to sign old UFAs to fill this role if you think it has value.

Worse players have fetched a 1st at the deadline, that's for sure.

I agree. We need assets right now. We can sign some vet UFAs in the summer to mentor.
Crosby probably would still be Crosby even if he didn't live with Mario.
I do believe some kids need this though.
Mcdavid could have used this with someone of Mario's reputation too. He's still playing a selfish game all about his points so many years later. He's 27 now and has a boat load of career points

The makeup of the players also matter. The reason the oilers had constant problems is because their kids always come in thinking they were finished products.
I got the impression they wouldn't listen to the old guys who were there.
