Chicago was the 7th youngest team in the NHL last season with an average age of 27.
Chicago's age is skewed up slightly by vets who aren't a big part of the team and aren't going to be there much longer: Brodie, Foligno, Maroon, Smith, Martinez and Mrazek. They are a younger team than the stats reveal.

Kind of like the Flames

Average age can be very misleading. As I have said a few times, even though the Flames have a high average age, they have a few vets, and a new, young core in the making. The only guys between 27-30 (core age) are Sharangovich, Andersson (gone), Bean and Miromanov (place-holders).

The Flames are a young team, with a few old guys still holding the fort.

Pains me to say it, because I love Coleman, but off the five guys over thirty (Lomberg, Backlund, Huberdeau and Kadri), he is probably the easiest to move.

Two years on his contract, still effective player, paid under 5M.
Instantly makes a team have better depth.

I like him more as a TDL move.

He with be very valuable at the trade deadline, with retention - a team could get him for 2 runs, on the cheap.

Flames are slightly different, in that they still have Huberdeau and Kadri as key pieces. 5 of the Flames top 6 scorers last year were 31 or older.

Still placeholders though. The Flames just aren't as far along in the process.

In a year or two, they will be the only 2 in the top 6 in scoring

Rasmus clearly the #1 target across the league, my source is still very confident he's moved as both sides have agreed this would be best.
Love this!

I wonder what Conroy's "price" is for Rasmus.

Have a feeling he's looking for something close to 2 1sts in value.

The "goal" is to get the price that Conroy has put out, which I hope is a future #1C. The timing doesn't matter as much as the actual objective.

I would be curious though, if there is a trade set up for the Flames to move up in the draft would the NHL put a pin in it and make the trade announcements all happen on Friday for the TV ratings?

If I was putting on a TV show on Friday I would absolutely hold draft related trades until then.

A deal could also be contingent on the player, the Flames want, being there at that pick.

Yeah, I think a move up trade is contingent on someone being there that the Flames want. No point in moving up if the player they want is gone.

Breaking; Sources say #mnwild Marco Rossi is in the process of being traded.

Marco Rossi would have become an RFA during Free Agency and the Wild had no plans to keep him in the future.

Oh, for sure. Like if the Sharks are willing to move their pick it would only be once Schaefer is off the board.

Similarly, if Misa goes 1st then the Flames could probably trade to #4 or #7 and still get a really good C at a slightly lower cost than if they tried to get to Misa.

But still... even if the teams locked in the trade today, I bet the NHL would make them sit on it until Friday just so Bettman could walk up to the mic and say "We have a trade!!!".

Sounds like they could use an extra hand. I could clear my calendar for the next few days in order to help them out.

That should take Robertson out of the mix. Good, as I think that would be a misstep by Conroy.

Interested to see how they mess it up

I like Reschny as the Flames pick this draft and Rossi is honestly a perfect comp for what best case Reschny ends up being, so it will be interesting to see what value that holds.

I agree that nobody is studying the Flames. It may be an unpopular opinion on the Board and not to re-hash this old argument, but I think that the Flames last rebuild did well in identifying good core players. It seems to me that they pulled the plug on the rebuild too early, couldn't find a decent goalie forever, and most importantly failed to find the right coach.

However, that team definitely showed strong identification of good players in the drafts and even some decent development of those players. It seems to me that management strategy failed in trying to be competitive too early and coaching hires.

So, I am comforted that we have similar people in the talent identification positions as last time - which is the current status of the organization. I am hoping that they have learned some lessons from the last time in terms of when the pull the plug on talent acquisition and coaching.
