Since they fixed up the 17th ave crossing it’s extremely easy and not frightening or yucky. If I’m downtown proper I’ll take the train down the 2-3 stops (I usually park more central downtown and do this). After the game or whatever event I’ll then walk down 17th and hit a bar or a restaurant. And judging by the crowds in both situations, there are hundreds if not thousands of people who do exactly this or one of the two, including women and families with children (though not the bar part!) who don’t seem grossed out by it.
Heavily recommend going car free next time. It’s not as scary and difficult as you think it is, I bet you’ll be quite surprised and it should only get better with the improvements.
