De-ice times this week have typically not been due to incompetence or lack of crews. To some degree, that's just how long it takes in certain conditions.

The ground crew situation at WestJet was a massive mistake, in my opinion, and it should have never happened. I suspect that once the contract comes up for renewal it will be scrapped and WestJet will bring that operation back in-house. They are already starting with a smaller operation of connection runners so that is a good thing.

We probably need a Westjet megathread, but I'm hoping 2022 is a wake up call for Westjet and Onyx about how bad they've screwed the pooch. Staffing wise, from ops, ground crews, to flight staff and tech problems - its been a disaster. AC has been miles ahead
I wish they were still public so I could watch their share price get nuked in real time for their poor management

The FAA is much quicker to just pull the entire plug. Seattle is fully closed till 1 pm.
They're trying to avoid the 8 hours waiting for a gate type of situation that just happened to YVR.

Those WestJet ground crew kids are getting run into the ground at YYC. Not uncommon to see them have minor mental breakdowns due to being overworked, just to get screamed at when it's one kid trying to work a 787 by himself. I have a lot of sympathy for those guys, and none for the predicament that put them there.
Agree with you 100% WestJet has dug themselves a huge hole here, and recovery will be glacial.

The roads/conditions in Calgary aren't great. The actual roads are fine and normal, but he visibility at times is pretty terrible. Be careful out there, if you have to go!
I've left myself one last thing to pick up and of course it's across the city...which I'm debating/procrastinating on at this point.

I remember how everyone seemed to hate AC with a passion but it honestly feels like that role has shifted over the last couple years and WestJet is trying to coast and rely on its past reputation.
I hope WestJet can get their crap back in order and at least return to some semblance of what they used to be.

Everyone wanting to sue airlines and be financially compensated for everything means airlines now just scrub the entire day and end up better off, though this is not what any passenger actually wants to hear.
Re: Lynx Air... they have six planes. It's a much easier operation to manage and you really don't have to pre-emptively cancel. You're not digging yourself a massive hole by trying to run your scheduled flights with a tiny fleet.

Glad you brought up the new passenger bill of rights Acey. This is one of the unintended consequences for passengers, airlines are more likely to just pull the pin entirely on a flight rather than risk getting stuck on the tarmac.

That doesnt seem entirely insane to me.
If I'm going to be stuck somewhere I think I'd rather be stuck in an airport rather than on the tarmac.

Almost got stuck on tarmac today. This morning leaving YYC we thought all was good. Boarded and were about to take off. Until pilot announce we were delayed indefinitely due to heavy snowfall. My worst fear, being forced to sit on plane for hours.
Thank god it only lasted about half hour, maybe 45 mins. Just when I was mentally preparing to have a long wait, we unexpectedly got the announcement that we were taking off anyways, even tho it sure didn’t look like the snow had let up. Not sure what the deal was but we were cool with it.

Made the mistake of going out to get a few groceries and lunch, it's always the guys without snow tires that don't understand it takes longer to stop when the roads are slick.
The guy behind me was following really close and I think he was getting mad because I left so much room in front of me.. but he almost skidded sideways 3 times when traffic stopped and he had to slam on his brakes to not hit me. See, that's why I left so much room so I could avoid you! Plus half a dozen cars in the ditch.
Strugglers out in full force, if it ain't in my house now I don't need it.

We thought so too when I closed my office earlier this week...then wine supplies started getting low.
We had a serious discussion regarding stricter rationing but we disregarded that option as non-viable.
At some point Slava came by to shore up our stores but thats not really part of this story.
So...if you're a Skip The Dishes driver....I'm sorry. I know I kind of sold you out there, but I tip pretty decently or so I'm told. Thank you for your service.
A thousand years from now when future archeologists are dissecting what caused the downfall of our society they will conclude...."It was when they got door-to-door wine delivery...thats what did them in."

We have to ditch these unreliable aeroplanes and get back to the real air-travel!
The Zeppelins! The Great Airships of Old!
Snow? Ha! They scoff at snow!
Cold? Bah! They mock cold!
Wind?? Okay, yeah, this one is a serious problem, we'll circle back to this one.
They just float over inclement weather!!
