I think the only way Johnny stays is a deep playoff run then a giant offer that includes the 8th year that he can only get here.
The giant offer and the thought that he can maybe win here just might be enough to keep him. So in other words a lot has to go right plus a boat load of money.
Yes, a lot of things have to go right to keep a guy that has made it clear he wants to stay here, he just bought a new home here last summer, and his wife is now working here. Keep that drama reel rolling though.

It's called an opinion. In a thread where people discuss what they think may or may not happen. No drama whatsoever. Fact is nobody, including you, has a clue what is going to happen.
You seem to think only your feeling that it's a forgeone conclusion he signs here is acceptable. You can't fathom the possibility a player would say one thing and do another.
I like the player and hope he stays here with a contract that works for both sides. I just have doubts that it will happen.

People have been known to sell homes. I’m guessing his wife could get a job back in the states too.
At the end of the day, a Johnny may stay , Johnny may go, it likely comes downplay to how much Calgary is willing to pay him to stay, rather than his reluctance to hire a real estate agent.
No one is saying having a home will keep him here.
The point was that you don't buy a home if you're certain you're moving in a year.
Proportionally, for a hockey player making north of $5M USD a year, buying a home would be somewhat equivalent to one of us buying an beater car and then selling it the next year when we are done with it.
It's not a big deal for them and it may be that they want to make modifications to the property such as renovations, etc. while they are living there whereas they could not do the same to a luxury rental property.
Dissentowner is more fanatical about Johnny re-signing than a new born Christian foaming at the mouth about the existence of Jesus Christ. Zero sum absolute certainty born from nothing other than faith on steroids. I think he's posted a version of his unwavering belief 20 or 30 times and seems insulted if anyone dare question him. I actually kind of admire it honestly
In my estimation, the Flames are at the very least losing one of Johnny, Tkachuk and Mangiapane. That's just the reality of it all for me.
Your center ice position, known more commonly as the most important position, is trending backwards with an aging Backlund and a .....I suppose you could say .....used up Monahan. It's Lindholm and thats it after those two.
I surmise that the Flames will likely reserve a large chunk of cap for a new top 2 center in the offseason because that's what good teams do.
And it'll likely mean sacrificing one of the 3 wingers to do it.
Especially considering the Flames have more wingers than centers ready to graduate from the farm to fill holes.
My guess, they lose Mangiapane in a RFA swap.
Edit: A thing that concerns me right now as well is that for all 3 players we can potentially lose, they're all playing amazing hockey and I do wonder if it's the contract year effort to maximize their next contracts, further inflating their value.

I hope he is right but it sure reminds me of his stance on Tavares and the Islanders. He was equally as steadfast there was no way JT was leaving the Island.
I’ve always sided with Dissentowner on the subject, a good portion of this forum has long panicked every step of the way that Johnny would always want to bolt, from college to first big RFA contract to now Johnny has always been destined to leave according to many. With the same fanatical stance and approach as Dissentowner one could argue, but I easily admire Dissentowner’s stance more because it’s positive and I truly feel Johnny and his family love Calgary and him playing for the Flames. I feel like lots of fans haven’t even enjoyed Johnny because of their constant worry about him and when I look at the couple times when he’s struggled here through his career I can usually point to something that explains it, the Johnny Gaudreau of the past 70 games is the Johnny Gaudreau we will become to love as much as Iggy. Hopefully Sutter and team can TCB here too and I haven’t felt this good about a flames team in a long time if ever.

I can't be right all the time, just most of the time.
Edward's chequebook isn't really that relevant in a cap world. The Flames GMs have spent to the cap any time they wish since the salary cap was implemented.

I know we always say this, but is it really a thing or just an old wives tale.

Yeah exactly. I don't really have an interest in his personal life but making a real estate investment means little about future plans.
Now if he was making massive reno's or customizations, that would be a clearer indicator they wanted to stay. Or whether he bought his dream home vs. something less expensive that they knew could be easily flipped in a year.
Get the internet detective out pulling permits and doing property searches.
When Johnny signs, I think he's likely earned the 'C'. Thoughts?
I used to like the idea that he can just do his thing without wearing a letter, but I feel like he's become a different type of player and person.
I wouldn't have an issue with that if the team supports it which I can't see why they wouldn't, assuming he even wants to be captain. I think the deal will get done around 9 million over 8 years and then I hope we get this year's Johhny every year.
