Flames trade 15th OA, 45th OA, and 52nd OA for Dougie Hamilton
If I'm not mistaken, Dougie will be arriving in Calgary today.
Edit: Bennett should be too.

Franchise Player
|
I love the pickup of Hamilton. He was the missing piece of the rebuild.
However, this thread has taught me that "franchise player" has come to mean something very different from what it used to.
It used to mean a player who could single-handedly turn around a struggling franchise. A player who was a sure-fire first-ballot hall of famer. A player whose name would be associated with the franchise forever. At any time there may be 6 or 7 franchise players in the NHL. Examples: Lemieux, Hawerchuk, Bourque, Yzerman, Sakic, Lidstrom.
Apparently, the term has become watered-down to mean something else?

I think most people believe he's a possible franchise player. Not too many top pairing 6'5" 22 year old defenseman out there. When he hits his peak in around 5 years there is a good chance he could be one of the best D in the game.

Yeah, it's pretty watered down. Essentially means core player now.

Ya and I think a majority of fans feel the same way about him. His skill set is good now and many think he could be one of the top defenseman in the league once he peaks. Boston fans definitely felt that way and it seems like many GMs fighting to get him felt that way.
I still can't believe that he is locked up here in Calgary. This is an exciting period for this franchise and we have a few people to thank, or Feaster, Burke, Hartley and Treliving. IMO they have all contributed significantly to this turn around.

Sutter deserves a lot of credit too for bringing in Gio, Backlund, Brodie, Bouma and Ferland

Even the worst GM will leave behind some useful pieces for the next guy. The fact that Sutter was let go 4.5 years ago and only 5 good players remain from our entire roster/farm system says a lot. Sutter made a few nice moves to be sure but overall he was a very lackluster GM IMO.

5 players?
Stajan, Gio, Ortio, Ferland, Backlund, Arnold, Brodie, Bouma. I guess you don't qualify some of those players as good?
Sutter wasn't the best GM but he was a blown call away from getting this team its 2nd Stanley Cup and acquired a decade long franchise net minder for a 2nd round pick

Well yeah, because that type of player is few and far between now, that kind of player gets classified as a 'generational talent' now.

Stajan is nothing special (is still one of my faves) and Ortio and Arnold haven't proven anything yet and are probably more attributable to Button anyway. My point was even bad GMs leave a few pieces. 2004 was amazing but when I look at his whole body of work, I'm pretty underwhelmed. Not the worst GM in team history though, not by a long shot. He might even be second best, sadly. Fletcher is #1 but who is #2? Treliving needs more time but the rest were even worse than Sutter. Kind of explains the 90s and 2000s.

Thats impressive. That is 25% of the 20 man active roster despite him leaving 4.5 years ago. This group includes top defensive pair, captain and #2 center. Not that bad in the end.
Sutter gambled on Olli being the center we always craved for and it failed, that was the turning point but at least he tried.

Kipper for a 2nd
Langkow for Gauthier and Sapyrkin
Commodore for a 3rd
Nieminen for Jason Morgan
Reinprecht and Warrener for Drury Begin
Bourque for 2nd
Cammaleri for 1st and 2nd
Tanguay for Leopold and 2nd
Huselius for Montador
Guy made quite a few solid to amazing trades. Yes he may have traded more picks than you like but this was a different time. There was far less emphasis on drafting and developing and the Flames were in win now mode. Picks didn't have the same value that they do now. And to be fair Sutter is the one who realized that their needed to be a change in drafting philosophy and is the one who implemented that change in 2007. You could easily make the arguement that Feaster isn't seen as having draft success without the philosopshy changes to drafting that Sutter made. Maybe he reaped the benefits of that? I just think people forget all the great things that Sutter did do in his time here.

Perhaps nothing, but maybe this is everything:
Shawn Hutcheon @ShawnHutcheon 3m3 minutes ago
All three #NHLBruins 2015 1st round draft picks, Zboril, DeBrusk, & Sensyshyn, failed today's off ice testing.
Initial response would be "OUCH".

Fairly normal for just drafted players to not be at NHL standard for fitness. Don't think it's a big deal.

That's downplaying it I think for 1st round picks. Although I don't think it's as catastrophic as I may have made it out to be but Gaudreau didn't fail, Monahan didn't, Sven didn't either.

How does one fail fitness testing? Do you fall off the stationary bike?

I assume sitting down and eating a whopper or two when you're supposed to be running.
