Good article! Guess it may have had to do with politics and Sepp Blatter getting re-elected...

Four years ago Kaiser Franz was critical of a potential England WC bid, stating that he felt they did not have a charismatic 'face' of the bid. He was Germany's in '06, Pele for Brazil, etc. This lesson was not lost on the England bid as they drafted in Beckham and William - Beckham for his footballing acumen, William because he is the President of the FA.

Right now the media here is looking for someone/thing to blame. In reality there is no real need for finger pointing as there are multiple reasons why the Soviet bid was successful. The BBC program didn't do a catastrophic amount of damage, but it surely didn't help. The bigger problem is the British media's role in society. It is far too intrusive, aggressive and undiplomatic. I'd wager that the majority of FIFA executives were not interested in being under the microscope for the next 7+ years. Technically the bid was the best, but there was zero legacy aspect which is what FIFA (and the IOC) keep banging on. How do you create a legacy in a country that is the home of football and has the most successful professional league? You don't. Their bid was about passion, logistics and the ability to stage a large-scale sporting event successfully - not about legacy. Their inability to play FIFA 'politics' was never more apparent. The bid team was professional and put forward a great bid. The media was supercharged and generally unhelpful with the process, leading some to cast their votes elsewhere.

There is a real problem in the UK with the larger media. You'd think they would want the WC here, but their actions were definitely in conflict with this basic premise.

Interesting thing with Chuck Blazer is that he promised his support to the England bid, along with Jack Warner, and it is believed that neither of them supported England's bid.

On that note I absolutely fail to understand where this perception of the English being arrogant comes from. After all we gave the world the English language, we can even spell the word, Arrogance, correctly, and we gave the world the beautiful game. This World Cup should have been OURS I tell you.

We even graced the process with the Man who would be King, and Prince William too. Even our superior Prime Minster showed up. What a lack of respect was shown that exalted trio.

Arrogance had nothing to do with losing this crooked process. People not knowing what is good for them was one reason and fat brown envelopes another.

Splitters the lot of them. Let them keep their poxy World Cup.

Hey, gays? You're welcome in Qatar - FIFA just asks that you "refrain from any sexual activity":

More weather innovation working to reduce the heat for the Qatar World Cup.

Quote:
Scientists at Qatar University claim to have invented a synthetic cloud which could shield stadiums and training grounds from oppressive heat. It is reported each cloud could cost in the region of $500,000. The project will be developed in conjunction with Qatar Science and Technology Park.

Saud Abdul Ghani, head of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Qatar University, said: "Artificial cloud will move by remote control, made of 100% light carbonic materials, fuelled by four solar-powered engines and it will fly high to protect direct and indirect sun rays to control temperatures at the open playgrounds."

Hahaha! Unfortunately, there usually would be some truth to that. However, with Qatar I think it's a different story.

FIFA faces fresh dissent over its choice of Qatar as host of the 2022 World Cup finals after a Swiss film crew was interned for filming a report on the Gulf state's staging of the showpiece.

Two journalists, Radio Televison Suisse (RTS) reporter Christophe Cerf and cameraman Yvan Thorimbert were stopped on April 1, handcuffed and interrogated at two police stations and detained for 13 days before the pair were fined by a judge in Doha.

Their camera was also confiscated and the two were only able to return home after Switzerland's Ambassador in Kuwait was forced to step in. RTS says that the crew had been told that they could film "freely" while on location, only for police to descend on their set and carry out arrests.

Yeah, this was so a good idea. Qatar is a pretty backward place.

Why England didnt win:

Quote:
Former Football Association chairman Lord Triesman has lifted the lid on the 2018 World Cup bidding process, accusing four FIFA executive committee members of requesting gifts in return for votes.

Here are the main points from a dramatic morning in committee room 15.
• Select committee said it would publish Sunday Times claims that FIFA vice-president Issa Hayatou from Cameroon and Jacques Anouma from the Ivory Coast were paid $1.5 million by the Qatar 2022 World Cup bid.

• Former Football Association chairman and World Cup 2018 bid leader Lord Triesman claimed FIFA vice-president Jack Warner asked for money - suggested to be £2.5million - to build an education centre in Trinidad with the cash to be channelled through him, and later £500,000 to buy Haiti World Cup TV rights for the earthquake-hit nation, also to go through Warner.

• Triesman also claimed Paraguay's FIFA member Nicolas Leoz asked for a knighthood.

• Brazil's FIFA member Ricardo Terra Teixeira told Triesman to "come and tell me what you have got for me''.

• Thailand's FIFA member Worawi Makudi wanted to be given the TV rights to a friendly between England and the Thai national team, Triesman said.

• Corruption concerns were not reported to FIFA because Triesman feared collapse in support for 2018 World Cup bid.

• Triesman claimed Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore offered to support the England 2018 World Cup bid in return for FA backing for his controversial 'Game 39' proposal.

None of this is surprising. That's why they did two World Cup bids at once.. so these old farts could get more money before they died.

Russia and Qatar now need to build stadiums.. FIFA will take a bite out of the constructions costs too.

We love Biggy, Johnny Cash and Stevie Wonder
It's no Biggy we got no cash and its no wonder
'Cause I'm proud we gave you people like John Lennon
Even though you shot him as well

Two nations divided
By a common language
And about two hundred years of new songs and dances
But the difference is language
Or just the bits you got wrong
'Cause we were the ones who invented the language

I really hope something comes of this, but I'm sure it'll all be the same in the end.
