Update: The girl and her date were sent to a "fake" prom.

To avoid Constance McMillen bringing a female date to her prom, the teen was sent to a "fake prom" while the rest of her class partied at a secret location at an event organized by parents.

I'm sure most of those parents consider their high school years to be the highlight of their lives.
Which sort of explains a lot about their behaviour. I like how they also discriminated against the handicapped kids while they were at it.
Stay classy Mississippi.

When will these little degenerates learn? You will not ever be accepted, so stop rubbing your life in their face by living it. I fully agree with BTC.

It would have been funnier if the fake prom featured cardboard cutouts of their classmates, while teachers pulled strings from the rafters to make them dance.
Then at the stroke of 10, they announce this girl and her girlfriend as queen and queen of the prom. Then soak them in pigs blood ala Carrie.
But on a serious note . . . are you freaking kidding me.

I don't condone that type of behavior but the other one was privately organized. No one can force the parents to invite the girl.
It is stupid that they didn't but they aren't legally obliged to invite this girl.

Wow. Nice to see those parents & school officials upholding those stereotypes of good ole backwards southerners. Clowns.
How do they justify this to themselves - aren't they blatantly contradicting many of the values in that book they love so much?

Imagine this hypothetical situation if you will:
Some preachy self righteous religious organization is in an area that has many gay and lesbian people in high ranking positions in society. All these people do every Sunday is try to go to church, occasionally read the bible in their own house and flaunt their heterosexual relationship in front of EVERYONE.
I am not just talking holding hands, but occasionally some of the younger ones go to clubs and you can see them groping each other!!! I think they might even be having sex in the alley behind the bowling alley. Now the gay community wants this all to stop, we can't have people flaunting thier sexuality like this, so they close all the clubs and cause a large public outcry of prejudice and hate every time one of those freaking hetros shows there face at a public function.
Finally someone decides that enough is enough, and they will not sit down and take this oppression like so many people before them have. They take their hetro partner out to the town sanctioned dance, where all there gay friends are and they want to dance like normal people and not segregated like animals.
Those freaking Hetros, all they want is attention!!
Well, that's correct, they just want to live their life the same way everyone else does, which doesn't involve hiding at home and never touching the person they love in a public place. Crazy hetros, can't they just be gay for one night to please everyone else?
Oh wait, that sounds absurd doesn't it?

I must have missed the part that says if you throw a private party you have to invite everyone.
No wait, I didnt miss that part because it isnt in there. The school screwed up by cancelling. Not sure how you can blame the parents for organizing a private prom for their children.
Is there another link to the story other than "the advocate".

Mykalberta there's no rule that says you have to invite everyone. It's perfectly legal for the parents to organize a prom where they don't invite the mentally challenged or homosexuals. They are just terrible people for doing it. Disgusting really.

I remember another party that didn't like homosexuals and the disabled...
...but to say their name here would leave my post to be accused of hyperbole.
In any case - I find it enlightening that this situation was clearly not just about a lesbian teen. The invite only prom also excluded the handicapped kids. I wonder if it would have excluded children of color, or of different religious backgrounds as well given the opportunity?
It is perfectly legal to have a "invite only" private party. Doesn't make it right for this situation. Nor does the legality protect these people from being called bigots.
Which is what they clearly are IMO.

I love the examples these children are shown by their parents. They stand to grow into upstanding, tolerant and open-minded individuals.
