Have you watched the show? Zach's character is written specifically for his style and delivery, and it's hilarious.
In Community each character is a stereotypical group you would see in college.
Alpha male - Winger
Complaining human rights complainer - Britta Filter
Innocent virgin queen - Annie
Movie nerd - Abid
Mother/religous - Shirley you can't be serious
Cool immature kid - Troy played by Donald Glover, Danny Glover's son.
(Made you look)
Then you have old creepy guy - Pierce
The problem is that while each character is pretty much flawed in some way. (Writing a flawed character helps the viewer to relate even if it is just a bit). The problem with Pierce is he is so flawed you can't relate and you don't like him. They started the show with him being a wealthy man, but really this is virtually forgotten/dropped by the writing crew. They made him a complainer and a creep and completely forgettable.
This last D&D episode was probably his best showing this season. While still being a complaining creep they focused mainly on him being the antagonist. This atleast made his character more fun and gave him more meaning. Take this last episode away and the show is just fine with Pierce out of the picture.
However, take Ted Danson and Chevy Chase; compare the performance and it is clearly one sided. One comedian can still be funny and fresh in his 60's and the other is still stuck in the 1970's-80's.
If it wasn't for Chevy and his Vacation series he would be a faint memory only revisited at Christmas time.
