Only getting publicity because it's James Cameron. He should have stopped at Terminator 2.

Anyone going on opening night? Although I am still not convinced I'll be pleased with it, I'm dragging the girlfriend along since it will be our first IMAX 3D experience.
Anyone with more IMAX experience know what is in store for wheelchair accessibility, wheelchair spots, etc? We're going to give them a call in a little bit and see what's up.

should be good to go, I think... I believe the IMAX theatre is like the other ones, the main level you walk inthrough has wheelchair accessible spots.

To an extent I agree with you. I would never choose to see a movie or not just based on what one critic said, but if there's a consensus then generally that reflects the quality of a film.

What use are critics?
I had no interest in this movie until I read Ebert's review:
http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/...IEWS/912119998
Once again, he has silenced the doubters by simply delivering an extraordinary film. There is still at least one man in Hollywood who knows how to spend $250 million, or was it $300 million, wisely.

I was interested in Avatar from the get-go but wasn't completely stoked until I read that review over the weekend. The line that stuck out to me was at the end.

It takes a hell of a lot of nerve for a man to stand up at the Oscarcast and proclaim himself King of the World. James Cameron just got re-elected.

Ebert and I have similar tastes in movies, so I will definitely be there opening weekend

Meh I have no problem basing my entire movie going experience on the advice of critics, I don't have the time or the disposable income to see all the movies that somewhat peak my interest. If it gets a high rating on RT (about 85%) than I'll see it, if I doesn't than I won't, simple as that.
I has originally not planned on seeing this movie based on the previews and such, but now that it's getting good ratings on RT I will make a point of seeing it at some point.

Avatar looks like fun. For starters, it's only a little over 2½ hours, which is usually good blockbuster length. Generally the longer they get, the more intolerable they become.
(Although The Dark Knight for example was way too long at that length. But it was just so bad it felt long I guess )
And hey, it's got Sigourney Weaver on a space ship, there's a good chance it's great Although I'm thinking they've also used the CGI to make her look younger, or the make-up department have really outdone themselves.

This is key. If any old reviewer gives it the thumbs up I'd say it isn't that important (unless it's somebody you strongly agree with like Ebert). However, if a population of people all tend to agree on it's quality I think that has more clout. That's why sites like metacritic and rotten tomatoes tend to draw my attention.
That being said often times you'll find yourself the outlier. I tend to find everything funny, so many comedies that don't strike a chord with everybody else will sit just fine with me. For those times i tend to go on opinion of my friends that have a similar sense of humour.
I think Avatar looks cool. I wasn't very big on it when I saw the first trailers, but the most recent one I saw had a bit more storyline in it and it was intriguing.

Maybe it's getting publicity because it's supposedly a masterpiece. Receiving excellent reviews.

Any suggestions from CP about how I can convince Rico to go with me to see this film? He has not fully embraced geekdom as of yet and doesn't quite share my enthusiasm.

Really? You can't think of a single way?
I'll give you hint: .
Just don't bug your eyes out like that it'll probably creep him out.
Sorry, I hope that wasn't too far.

Spoilers ahead? Probably not too many, but just sayn in case you wanna steer clear.
Dont know what I expected from IMAX, but not sure the Q Street theatre was it. No complaints though (seeming lack of a/c aside). Frack sitting in the front row for that stuff though. Heart went out to all those dudes stuck up there. Then again, maybe its not as bad as a person would imagine.
Anyway no need to get too in depth probably, most dudes are gonna probably see this and have already done some background reading.
Movie feels flat, and yet is bloated on influence and cliche. Giovanni(?) Ribisi I think was in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, and although Avatar was better, on first viewing it felt almost as hollow. And wasn't Sky Captain meant to "push the envelope" as well?
Slow mo (esp. death scenes), flute music, those "shaky-pan" shots of broad landscapes and environments that LOTR used to max effect; all those things are used to death here. Bummer that it relied on those sorts of mechanics at times, and didn't push things in different directions with the thematic and character stuff. That said, it cruised along at a tilt and I thought it was thoroughly entertaining with a massive wow factor at times. Doesn't hold a bioluminescent jellyfish to District 9 though, imo. Anyway thats my take. Do want to see again at some point.
And yeah, Stephen Lang as King Jarhead kicked ass. Could have done with more swearing and all around menace from him (ala Full Metal Jacket), and maybe some more blood spilt, but then, this thing is unapologetically more of a family-friendly time out. Sorta miss the Aliens-era Cameron, but there were some good echoes of that esp. towards the end. From someone who gets real tired of CGI, there are some phenomenal creatures and designs here, and some great action beats.

So does any theatre you goto provide the 3D glasses or do you have to goto IMAX?
Or is IMAX recommended anyway because of the larger screen?

Just got back from the midnight Imax show at Chinook.
That was single handedly the most amazing piece of art I have ever witnessed. Yes, art, not movie, art. Throughout the film I kept having to pinch myself in order to remind me that I was in fact still in a theater. Cameron set out to take the viewer to another world and he not only took every patron in that theater to it, he sent them all there on a rocket to the heart of the sun (or Pandora in this case I suppose).
I truly believe that filmmaking will never be the same again. Just as he did in 97 with Titanic, JC took everything to another level, and the rest of the industry will be scrambling to keep up.
For years CGI aficionados have been discussing the idea of realism in 3D and whether or not a CG character could have a true soul, well after about 2 minutes of picking my jaw up off the floor when the Navi are first seen on screen I completely forgot that they were renderings from a computer and not real characters. Hell at one point when the viewer is introduced to the tribe and its Chief, I said to my buddy "hey that looks like Wes Studi, the dude that played Magua from Last of the Mohicans", well credits roll, and whose name appears? It was simply amazing.
Like Titanic the majority of the films 3/4s are building the characters, the atmosphere and the story. Even though it's the tried and true Pocahontas story line, it is delivered in a new and ingenious way with our hero able to bounce between the two factions, it kept you glued to the screen, eager to find out which way the end battle would come to fruition, and boy when it comes, it comes with a bang!
The final 25 minutes of the film are simply spellbinding. I was worried at first that it would be just another giant battle scene with the effects guys trying to see how many warriors they could fit on the screen at once. Thankfully for anyone gracious enough to watch the film, it turns out to be the single most amazing collage of awesomeness ever to grace celluloid (or a computers hard drive I guess, it is the digital age).
See this movie. See it now. Then see it again. You will not be disappointed. Simply undescribable. Unbelievable.
