Is the nudity, thongs, and general displays of debauchery really needed?
|
One person's debauchery is another person's celebration. Nobody's breaking any laws. They're just offending your apparently conservative sensibilities.
But that's kind of the point, being gay for many is about thongs and leather and all that. So when there's a parade focused on being gay, gasp, people come out in leather and thongs.
Who does it hurt? Absolutely no one.

I would really hope that its not really based on that belief.

Oh please... are you a nihilist? Do you honestly believe that everyone's values and meaning are equal?
Old men walking around naked is disgusting and violating the law.

Not any more than Mardi Gras or Carnivale show heterosexuals as perverts.
As I have said before, come to a gay pride parade. Calgary's parade will be the first weekend of September...you will be surprised by how "non-threatening" the event really is.

Nope, all i am saying is pride parades aren't going to change anyone's lack of tolerance, those who aren't tolerant aren't attending pride parades. The benefit of these events are moreso for the participants - you get a day where you can just be yourself and celebrate that with your peers and people who support you, nothing wrong with that at all.....I just don't think that the purpose should be to change anyones mind, and if it does that is great...

Well, I agree that Mardi Gras et al falls under the same type of event, so I'm not drawing a double standard and I have never stereotyped all homosexuals or all Pride events as being the same.

That's why I never go down to Wreck beach (naked old men) and that's why you don't have attend a pride parade! And if someone is offended by it, why are they there in the first place

Because simply thats a pretty shallow belief system. Homosexual life style like the heterosexual lifestyle is all about forming loving consensual relationships between two loving partners or finding a connection within your sexual sphere.
Saying its about leather and thongs and bondage wear is simply one group within that community.
Its would be like defining a hetero sexual definition of relationships on the strip club lifestyle or the S+M show that comes to Calgary once a year.

I'm not too up on Mardi Gras or Carnivale. What perverted things are the damn heterosexuals doing at these events?
Oh, and if you could include pics that would be greatly appreciated!

I think this is a great point, and I can't believe that I spent so much time on my vacation day (sans a hour break to work out) on this thread and the religion thread.
Now if y'all don't mind I've got things to do.

Maybe someone wants to educate their children about gays .... but they can't because there's a bunch of old white fat guys walking down the street with their dicks hanging out (as in the Toronto 2009 Gay Pride Parade).
Defeats the purpose I say and enforces a stereotype.

Except that Pride's purpose is create an atmosphere of trust and community spirit. Naked old men do not accomplish that, in fact, they perpetuate a stereotype which is damaging to the community.

Which is why going to a pride parade is not a good way to educate children...

Yeah and for some that sexual sphere is leather and thongs and they're out there proclaiming that. Because being gay to them is a sexual identity and their sexual identity is leather loving man.

They can't educate them about gays because they don't want them to see real gay people displaying their sexual identity? For children the Pride Parade probably isn't the best place to start but I would certainly take my children to a pride parade if I really want to educate them about gay culture.

Then don't hold it in public (not only in public but in the center of downtown Toronto) and don't use my tax dollars to pay for it.
