I was trying not to confuse the 2. "A" quality worker is something a lot of Microsoft guys use that I started to adapt.
Intelligent, self-motivated, well-rounded and not just an expert in just one field, the ability to use knowledge in your field to apply to other fields, those who do their work with pride and not for a pay check, driven but patient, the ability to do things never done before ... hopefully doesn't require good spelling...in my case. In a science/engineering related field, the science is the easy part. Learn and regurgitate, its like a process that any moron can do. The "artistic" part of science is the challenge.
Basically, a "A" quality person is someone Microsoft, Google and Facebook would hire. A "B" quality is still a quality worker, but one that probably isn't as driven or is able to do the job s/he is asked, but doesn't go beyond to do things never been done before. A "C" is another league below, then "D" then so on.
In a few interviews I did, some tested for this self-termed "A" quality designer, 3 rounds of interviews and a written test. The interview would start out with a 1 hr written test of questions of fundamental questions. The first round was a little bit of a "get to know you," a few questions to test your personality and motivation, etc. Second wrong was a test of my resume, where they would ask about specific questions about my design project, and I would have to justify it so they know I wasn't BS. The 3rd round would be the tougher technical question, where they would basically test me until I run out of knowledge. A few companies I hope to work for interview like that, and hire based on the person rather then posting jobs (i.e. you submit a resume, and if they like you, they find a position for you; but they don't post job). I was brought in a few times for an interview for some of these companies for jobs, but since my industry is based on people buying new iPhones and faster cable modems or whatever, these jobs were never created. Right now, I think there are a few holes (personally and in my resume) I'd like to fill and work on - you are as strong as your weakest link, and its often hardest to try and improve these weaknesses then to work on your strengths, so its something I sort of see as a channel to success, so I guess thats why I harp on it so much.
OT: A list of "Principles" of a company I'll probably work for, some are cheezy, some telling, but one I thought was really funny

4. Do not suffer fools.
There are always individuals (although few at Maxim) who are not focused on the goals that need to be achieved. Do not let others stop you, lead you astray, or waste your time; be polite and move on with your goals. Indulgence in idle conversation is a waste of everyone's valuable time and should be saved for a more appropriate setting, outside of work.
