Heck, KITT, Transformers and the Star Wars fighter barely belong. Herbie? What did he ever do? Float? Call me when he travels through time or jumps a moving train. Edit* or he can destroy a Romulan Warbird to join the cool kids club.

Her tires are a year older than yours and therefore have more miles and less tread. Her brakes are a year older and therefore have less braking power. If she still has those atrocious Continentals on, they're terrible for braking.

I don't know how we got onto braking, but a 4x4 is move drivable in poor road conditions then your standard 2 wheel drive vehicle. Yeah, when you have to slam on the breaks there might not be any difference, i can't speak for you, but i try to avoid those situations whether i am driving a 4x4 or not.
In pretty much every other situation, IMO, 4x4 outperforms any similarily equiped 2wd vehicle.

I'm not mechanically inclined enough to explain the ins and outs of AWD and 4WD vs. 2WD, but I think the reason why you have more control with a 4WD is that on icy conditions, your car may still slide, but it won't fishtail. In a 2WD, especially if its rear wheel, when the car slips, it often feels like the back is going to fishtail out of control, and you really need to know how to steer properly so that the car doesn't spin out.
Braking wise, its probably the same feeling. When you brake on a 4WD, it feels like you have better control because your car isn't fishtailing all over the place vs. the 2WD. I think momentum wise, it should be relatively the same, as you're really only slipping because your tires aren't gripping, and your car is going forward because of its acceleration.
Bottom line, I'm a HUGE advocate of winter tires. Winter tires on a 2WD is way better than all seasons on a 4WD, in my humble opinion of course.

If its just brakes, 4wd and 2wd are identical kthnxbye

Also, I love how ANY conversation that even remotely mentions snow and roads turns into a winter tire/bad driving thread.

I've often said that myself...couldn't agree more.
I still maintain braking in a 4WD is the same as in a 2WD. As somebody else said, it comes down to tires and brakes more than anything else. The 4WD system doesn't impact braking in a any way, with the exception perhaps of adding a bit more weight to the vehicle which may help but probably not to any material degree.

Awesomemobile is so awesome, it doesn't need winter tires.
