Why would a military be needed?
make a deal with the US if need be, or sign a pact with whats left of Canada.
Lots of countries get along quite nicely without a military force.

We have the world's most valuable resource, and we have it oozing out of our provincial pores.
And you want to leave protection of the defense of the black stuff to others?
This in addition to Alberta being a right-wing conservative country, I would think a military would be widely supported.

Wow, the typical question
If they were taking 42 year old slightly overweight retired soliders with rage issues, I'ld be in.

When that kid gets continually beaten over the head by the Liberals when they're in power/the NDP and the Bloc when they're running power
1) National Energy Program, it may be 20 years ago, but we don't trust the Liberals because of that
2) Jean Chrietien stating loudly that he doesn't understand us and doesn't really like us
3) Marc Lalonde - Alberta will come to heel
4) The closure of Calgary's Military base and seeing it moved to a Liberal Riding in Edmonton to punish us
5) Paul Martin deciding to avoid Alberta during his election Campaign
6) Dion's green shift that would have gone after our industries heavily while at the same time promising exemptions to Ontario Industry
7) Jack Layton flying over the Oilsands while smugly assuring that he would shut it down.
8) Jack Layton during the debate and his rant about evil big oil
9) Gilles Ducceppe see above
and on and on and on and on

I say we bomb Quebec and take their Maple Syrup. Then move on to Ontario and take their... smog... then Manitoba's irrelevancy... the Maritime's fish... Saskatchewan's wheat and BC's dope... seals from the Territories...
Holy crap. Are we the only province in this country that has anything work stealing?

No.

Jack and Gilles went up on Hill
To start some political banter
Dion led and words were said
And were all shot down by Harper

And Alberta's 3.4 million people could form a military capable of standing up to the US?
Face it, we wouldn't need a military. And suggestions of it being required are so short-sighted so as to be laughable.
If the US wanted our oil in that fashion, they would invade today, regardless of whether Alberta was a province or a nation. You think the mighty Canadian army is what is stopping them now?

As a fifth generation Albertan I would have to say "no". I do consider myself Albertan first but most of the succession talk is a little to extreme for my liking. (My Great Great Grandfather moved to Cochrane from Virginia after the Civil War, so I guess we have seen in my family that succession attempts can be costly) Not having a sea port could be a problem for trade. Others have also mentioned that once the oil dries up Alberta doesn't really have an economic advantage, especially with cattle in the toilet.
I grew up in a area that would love to see an independent Alberta. I haven't talked to anybody back home since the feces hit the fan on Parliament Hill. But I can just hear the words, bullet, head, used in numerous sentences when referring to Dion and Layton. (although that kind of talk would have been common before the recent events in Ottawa).

Sometimes I just shake my head.
A military is one of the core components of ANY sovereign state. I mean...
How would you deal with terrorist attacks on pipelines? Domestic strife or riots? A huge unprotected and land locked border? How would you deal with foreign entries to your airspace? You'd invite a foreign military to do it? At what cost?
Come on people.

So you're suggesting we separate from Canada, and then demand that the "new" Canada or the U.S. protect us? And what reason do they have to do this?
What are you going to do if there is national dissention? What are you going to do if we can't even keep our own people under control? And what are you going to do if there is a natural disaster and needs national guard-esque troops to help with the rescue efforts?
Your suggestion that the nation of Alberta shouldn't need any sort of national military presence is laughable at best. If I'm not mistaken, then we'd have to let the Calgary Police Service provide military prevention in the event of an emergency, considering that would be the next most ample "military" style resource.

1. we sell them oil
2. the world community
As far as the rest goes, obviously some kind of national guard would be useful, but your arguments are flat out ridiculous.

Well Switzerland has an army so that point is just flat out false.
The rest of those seem to be the exceptions that prove the rule. Thanks!
