I'm still looking to pick up any of: Canadian, European, or American Fiction, or Graphic Novel. Will trade non-fiction bio, travel, historical, anthology.
As well, if someone is desperate to trade international fiction, I'll accept it as part of a two-for-two with any of the above categories (for example, european plus international for bio plus travel).

I would like to pick up another travel.
I could do without European fiction.

I'm adding Sci-Fi to the list of categories I'm shopping. So I'm willing to trade bio, history, anthology, or sci-fi for Canadian, European, American, or Graphic Novel.

After considerable hemming and hawing (and occasional harrumphing) my pick is the novel " No Great Mischief" by Alistair Macleod in the Can Lit category.
It was first published in 1999 and tells the long story of a Scottish immigrant family that move to Canada (Cape Breton) and, well, they, you know, live. Have kids, work, die, eat, move away, all that kind of stuff that real humans do.
On the back of the book Alice Munro said this... "You will find scenes from this majestic novel burned into your mind forever".
Now I might not put it quite that way, but that sums it up for me. It's been several years since I read it and there are still scenes burned into my mind. I still remember what everyone looked like (to me). Just thinking about a couple parts makes me kind of cold. It was cold in the olden days, dontcha know?
There are maybe a couple others in this category that I could have picked that I like just as much or more, but everyone's heard of them (old Jewish guy with cigar, frizzy haired woman). This one isn't so famous so I figured I'd throw it out there.
And that, my friends, is the start of the third round.

I'm kind of glad you did, since it allows me to ask, without mucking up the draft thread......
When you read something like this, a book where you get such strong pictures in your mind, and the sound of voices, or even the pronunciations of word/names/places, would rather they were never adapted to movies?
I've wondered if a large reason movie adaptations rarely work (well, outside of needing to pare the story down to fit into a movie's length) is that a large part of a well written story is the picture the author can create in your mind's eye. When it is put into film, then it is someone else's interpretation, and it often doesn't fit as well as your own.
Just a thought.

Yeah that happens almost every time. You think of something/someone looking a certain way when you read the book and then they make a movie of it that looks ridiculous in comparison. And when they chop all the good stuff out so they can tell the story in 90 minutes and all hope is lost.
I mentioned it in the draft thread -- A Prayer For Owen Meany was a great book but the movie (loosely based) called "Simon Birch" just didn't cut it.
When I was in school a professor railed about the version of A Portrait of the Artist as A Young Man that he had assigned. He said it was the cheapest version available so that's why he ordered it, but it had a few illustrations that didn't look anything like he had imagined. This old coot had been reading the book for 40 years, so he was pretty sure what it looked like.
"There's no goddamn way he leans against the mantel like that" he said about one particular scene and the accompanying illustration. He bitched about that for quite awhile. I remember thinking "just shut the hell up and tell us what we're missing", but he did have a point.

Uh oh - I had better start filling my Fantasy category before you and Aeneas clean out the good stuff *shakes fist menacingly*

I wouldn't mind getting rid of my Scientific pick, preferably for a fiction pick, but if there are any offers, PM me.

I would trade Canadian Literature for Sci Fi...since somebody took all the Canadian books I would have picked.

Reason: think I traded American Lit already!
