I voted Green because I am hoping they can eventually win a couple seats and then hammer on the gov't. The Tories are tired, I STILL haven't forgiven the Liberals for the NEP, and the NDP are stuck in the 1960s. So much for democratic choice.

This was just the first line... where some poor sucker had to look over his list and find out that I'm not on it, despite having voted there in the Civic Election. He sends me to the new registrations line. Strike 3.
The new registrations line is 10 deep. Chatting with the guy there, he estimated that 80-90% of the people who showed up were not registered. Good job, enumerators.
|
I believe these 2 are connceted. When i got there i wasn't on the main list, but I busted out registration notification and it said go to station 3 and low and behold i am on the list there.

I think you'll find that the Alberta Liberals had nothing to do with the NEP... If that's the only reason you won't vote for them it may be time to reconsider and make a decision based on their policy today.
On another topic, does anyone know if there are any websites posting live results after the polls close?

I completely agree. While I truly wish that Dinning won the PC vote instead of Stelmach, I just can't bring myself to vote Liberal or NDP. I think both would spend without thinking and put so many burdens against oil and gas companies they would weaken the economy. I would definitely vote liberal over NDP but i think I will stick with PC because at least they attempt to run the govt like a business. Liberals and NDP only believe in spending and if the govt were a business to them they would long be out of business.

Ya know, I haven't even heard what the Liberal policies are, besides "don't vote Conservative". Is there even one running in my riding? I have fire starter from the Conservatives and NDP, but nothing from the Liberals...

Certainly not in federal politcs where the Conservatives ran a huge deficit and the Liberals were paying it off after.
As for the provincial wings of the parties, Alberta has no recent history of either party governing, so I can't see how you can make that statement from anything other than a hunch.

Have you listened to their platforms. Spend spend spend. Where do you think they would come up with that money?

I can't really speak to their current platform to be honest--I've been out of the loop for a while, though there was a time when I was very involved.
As for why you didn't get a flyer, it may be that you live in an area where the liberals just aren't competitive. They can't carpet-bomb the whole city, so they have to target ridings (and neighbourhoods within those ridings) where they have a chance to win. It's political strategy 101.

This is an argument I hear a lot, and since you bring it up, I want to ask about it. It's often used as code for fiscal responsibility, but businesses often operate in the red for years in anticipation of future windfalls. Businesses also tend to be run autocratically and not democratically, and are concerned only with profit as opposed to governments, which it seems to me ought to be more interested in providing services in exchange for the taxes we all pay.
So, I guess what I'm asking is: in what important way is government like a business? It sounds kind of like saying "government is like a car." It sounds good, rhetorically it may have some power, but it just isn't a good comparison.

actually, deficit spending began, in this country, back in 1969 under Trudeau's watch. It continued for about 30 years, 2/3rd of that time was under a Liberal government; certainly, a huge burden of blame is on Mulroney's shoulders, however

Though it is true that the PCs under Mulrooney racked up the majority of that debt. It needs to be pointed out also that that was a response to the mess Trudeau left behind.

You said that you wanted the government to be ran like a business. Spending is generally good for the economy... like the old saying goes; you need to spend money to make money. As long they are investing and not spending more than they are making, then it should be fine.
Alberta makes so much money, I doubt the Liberals (or NDP for that matter) could run a deficit in Alberta.

i agree. Unfortunately, Mulroney didn't have the guts to drastically cut the spending side of the ledger that Trudeau inflated. Instead, he brought in the GST to increase revenues, essentially acting like a liberal
Chretian was more conservative than Mulroney when it came to fiscal policy

Voted Green partly because it's my usual protest vote and because I didn't like anyone else. This election = yawn.

I imagine all of them will.
Good web locations, nodice.ca perhaps.
CBC has streaming video and audio of their TV and radio coverage:
http://www.cbc.ca/albertavotes2008/
And both the Liberals and WRA really wish our poll was indicative of how the real voting went.
