Just shovelled the driveway, the snow that built up in drifts decided to freeze in chunks so it was like shovelling ice bergs.. Man that sucked. Hard to breathe out there too and felt like my fingers were going to snap in two, and I even had gloves on.

LOL - and here is Vancouver we are worried about -2 to -4 and a few cm of snow. Of course in Vancouver a few cm of snow = melt = freeze = ice = cars sliding down hills. Always fun to watch the twits when they don't have the tires to be out.
So a quick question do all of you have your cars plugged in with engine heaters? Is this still required as I don't think my car even has one??
So -30 can you have skinned exposed? I think the coldest I have ever been is -15 and I worked back then as an electrician in training. First time I ever wore 2 jackets and 2 shirts and long john and still froze my tutu. Yes I am a West Coast whimp.

Newer gas vehicles can start at pretty cold temperatures without plugging in the block heater. I had a half tonne (company vehicle) that I never plugged in once. But my current diesel truck I usually plug in if the temp is supposed to drop below minus 10C.

My VW doesn't even have the ability to be plugged in, no factory block heater option
Synthetic oil and a good battery, though I haven't tried to start my car since this cold snap started, my battery is a little old now so not sure if it'll actually go.

You guy's minus 2 feels like minus 20 sometimes though because of that...whats it called?...oh yeah, the Pacific Oceon. With the wind, the moisture/humidity just goes right straight into your bone marrow. I'm from northern BC and even I have to admit it gets chilly down there if it wants to. The drivers thing is funny to watch, It's almost like an organized sport.

Ya I was gonna say that too. I moved out to Nanaimo briefly about three years back and was told the coldest it gets out there in the winter is around -5, and it'll maybe snow 2-3 times all year. I laughed when I heard that, considering I'm born and raised in Calgary(with brief stops in Edmonton and Winnipeg). Then December rolls around, and you're in +2 that feels like its about -18. And when it snows the entire town shuts down, due to how windey the roads are. We had a deep, sharp driveway and even a tow-truck refused to get my car out. It's completely different out there.
...though the absolute worst I felt out in Nanaimo pales in comparison to what we're going through here right now. -39 as a low tonight here in Edmonton(and thats excluding wind chill), the all-time record low is only a degree less, back in 1886. I've got my car in the garage and plugged in, good times...

My thoughts exactly. Was up skiing at Cypress Mtn Wednesday with nothing but blue skies above and blue ocean below. I'll take the odd long stretch of rain and year round green grass any day.

Yeah, its so freakin cold that we had a water line break...INSIDE! One of our fire sprinkler heads just inside the lobby doors exploded and flooded our entire lobby. Fire Department said it was because of the cold. I guess we figured an indoor skating rink might add to the winter theme....

One of those "uphill both ways" posts...I lived Mackenzie, BC for 4-some odd years and the coldest I experienced was -48 with no wind. Needless to say, not too much was moving. I don't miss it one bit.

I have to shoot a wedding near Canmore on Saturday. I hope it warms up a little, otherwise I won't have a very happy bride and groom.

Yeah, I think the global warming crowd realized it only made sense when it's too warm, they needed to cover their asses on the downside!

i'm loving my Mazda 3 more than ever now. -30 and it starts up in the cold after a day at work with no problems with the remote. it also handled +40 in vegas for a week with the air conditioning cranked without ever being close to overheating. they should put that in the advertisements

So you're saying if I give the bottom of the door a little kick, it won't unlock?

Frustrating day for me in the cold.
Garage door wouldn't work this morning or tonight - had to go manual. Not a big deal but still a pain in the arse.
And then the car wouldn't start after work. Even got a guy to give me a boost - nothing. Wasn't even trying to turn over.
So call Saturn for their "24/7 assistance" which of course they were not offering today. Nice. No hope of a tow truck either.
Go back out 45 minutes later just to see if she'll fire up and sure enough she goes.
Weird.

If it wasn't even trying to turn over, then maybe there's a loose connection in the starter or something.
