Of course Ledger's death is big news. That doesn't mean he deserves different judgement than the guy who overdoses down the street.
And to compare John Lennon to some random actor is what's truly nonsense.

Do you realize that there are different types of overdoses?
1) Overdose - due to abuse of illegal drugs.
2) Overdose - with intent to kill/harm oneself.
3) Overdose - accident in dosage or drug combination of legal PRESCRIBED and OVER THE COUNTER medications.
4) Overdose - unintended bodily reaction to legal PRESCRIBED or OVER THE COUNTER medications.
etc etc
You have all of NO evidence that this is anything but one of the later two options. I have worked for the Health Region for 10 years and see it all the time - it is FAR FAR FAR less rare then you might think.
Furthermore, (relevant to Ledger or not) many artists live all sorts of troubled lives. Dealing with the same thing that gives them an edge in their performances is what kills them. It has been like this for hundreds of years, it is not a new phenomenon.
But regardless, he took on some brave roles (including arguably one of the most so in many years) and seems to have given up a large bit of fame and fortune to stay true to his art. That can be respected both here and in the press - especially in this day in age of senseless sensationalism. After sitting through all this horrible Spears and Simpson and so on coverage, this is the least of my worries.
