I agree with a lot of what you have posted here other than the part in #3 where you say you cant curse or finger another driver. Sometimes it is exactly what you need to do because the driver is so unaware of what he is doing that someone needs to wake him up. IE: talking on cell phone and cutting people off, driving down the highway for 30 miles with signal light on ect.

The other day I saw an old lady on Memorial READING A FLYER! I had my sister slow down so I could yell at her. You know what she did? She moved the flyer further up on her steering wheel!

Also, the lady who was about 2 car lengths back from the stop line... I rolled my window down and pointed to the line. She moved up.

That more often does harm than good. See, the problem with idiots is that they don't know they are idiots, and resent being told the truth about themselves. Also, when you are worrying about what another driver is doing, you are not paying sufficient attention to what you are doing, and thus are guilty of #4.

It's pretty simple and no offense you have to be a pretty big idiot to not understand, right lane is for people travelling slower then the posted speed limit, the left lane is for those who are travelling at the speed limit, it has never said anywhere on any sign on Deerfoot that the left lane is for those who wish to travel above and beyond the speed limit. If you wish to speed then go ahead but don't b*tch about people who are doing the right thing because some may not be bright enough to understand what the left lane is for.

I'm also a hell of a lot more aware of my surroundings because i'm looking to move out of the way of fast people instead of being so self absorbed in my own life that i can't get out of the way when i'm puttering along holding up the lane.

You can get an idea just from this thread why driving in Calgary is a mess... Everyone has their own idea of what safe/proper driving is. In a lot of city's I have been to, there seems to be a certain "way" to drive IE: In most cities in europe you WILL stay away from the fast lane if your not going to drive fast or you WILL hear about it. It tends to work well, people just follow the unwritten rules of the road and people who want to drive slow have their lane(s) to do so and the people who want to drive fast have their lane(s) to do so. In some cities in the US, the traffic actually flows quite slowly, but it flows, because everyone seems to drive the same way

Then you get to Calgary and everyone seems to have a big ego about driving habits. Everyone has their "way" of driving and they think everyone who doesn't drive their way is a ######bag. We have the speed demons (I'll admit to being one of them at times) who think they're entitled to drive 140 and everyone's an a**hole if they don't get out of their way. The you have the people who just barely go the speed limit in the left lane and think everyone on their bumper is an a**hole.

Let's face it, Calgary just doesn't have a :driving identity" like many major cities have, and that's the reason for a lot of the pissed off people on the road.

I guess the one thing that sticks out about Calgary for me, is the fact that in a lot of cities, the speeders are aloud to speed and the slower drivers just laugh when they get caught, where as in Calgary it seems that the slower drivers tend to try and be the police by blocking speeders and saying "yeah, well it's MY RIGHT to drive in the fast lane because I'm going the speed limit". Overall Calgary just seems to have a bad mix of really fast drivers and really slow drivers, yet no real system of keeping them apart (which many eurpeon cities have, and it works REALLY well), which makes for some really crappy traffic to drive in.

agreed, coming from back east and having many visitors and family come out here, the most frequent comment i get is "people in calgary do not know how to drive" and the left lane thing is most commonly cited.

Yep, and like I said, you can tell just from reading this thread that Calgary has no driving identity. That's the thing that most of my relatives from back east say too. "Why are there so many slow drivers in the fast lane, don't they know to move to the right?" or " All the cars in this city are going all different speeds in all different lanes". But then you talk to a lot of people in Calgary that say things to the effect of "if you're going the speed limit, you're entitled to drive in the left lane" or "isn't the 'slower traffic keep right' rule just for outside the city?", and then you realize why our traffic is kind of messed up.

BTW, I'm not sticking up for the speeders, I'm just simply stating why ouru traffic doesn't flow very well in CAlgary.

And if a driver wasn't speeding his distance would be shorter and thus possibly avoiding an accident.

Then there's less time to react/avoid an accident.

It's the red-faced, expletive-screaming, fist-shaking, horn-honking driver that's the real menace on the road. Last week I had stopped in the left lane at an intersection (the next one a short block away was backed up by a red light), Feller behind me wanted to turn, and I guess wanted me to turn as well to speed up his journey for him. Wasn't going to budge cause it aint was the direction I was goin' and I ain't was takin' a detour after his tirade. Guy was in a convertable too, so I heards him good.
