Molecular Virology Technician at a CFIA research lab (unless I get a pink slip in the coming days).
Slowly, and I mean very slowly writing my MSc thesis.

My job is coming up for elimination here pretty quick. The software I use to do my job got bought out by it's main competitor and is being eliminated. The company who bought it out wants triple the cost in software maintainence if we switch platforms. Owner doesn't want to take on the added cost to switch. So I can go back in time 12 years and use AutoCad again, or keep using StruCad but become an extinct species at a young age... Still have 35 years of working life to go.
I have one year of experience on the other software Tekla, but that was 6 years ago. The only jobs these days in the trade are for guys with a lot of recent experience using Tekla.
Not sure what to do, I'm oldish....broke, have a family and pretty much out of work with a lot of specialized, but now useless work skills. How things can change.

Start figuring out Tekla on your own time if possible. Fudge your experience with it.

No one will fall for that. It's a small group of employers where most know exactly who and what their competition do. Not to mention I'd need to break the law to try and figure out Tekla on my own time. Tekla believes in software security in North America and charging us hefty amounts to use it. There's only so much I can pick up from watching whatever online training videos I can find.
Tough spot, companies using Tekla just saw 20% of their competition eliminated, or severely disabled pretty much overnight. Considering that one of Tekla's main distributors is part of this competition group, and desperate for work so they can keep all their offices in India running, it sucks.

I'm a full-time student in Civil Engineering. During the summer I do work of mapping underground infrastructure like sewers and water mains for the city, using Microstation software. I am starting co-op this summer and have three years with co-op left to go after this one. Once I graduate, I would like to work in the transportation field, but over the next few years I would like to try and see what other fields I may be interested in both through course work and co-op placements.

Pawnbroker. Started doing it at 17. Worked at a chain and was running a shop on my own a month after graduating high school. In my early 20's I tried a change of pace. Went back to school, spent a few years trying to get into a completely different field. Didn't like it. Went back to working in a pawnshop. Been at the same place for 8 years now. I pretty much run the show, get to do whatever I want. Rarely go home angry about my job. It is nice to be able to leave work stuff at work. Lots of nice perks.

Typically I am against piracy, especially if you're using it for commercial gain. But for educational purposes, actually learning to use the software properly, torrent it. I sure as hell didn't buy myself a copy of Windows 2000 Server and Exchange Server when I was 19.

You must encounter some pretty interesting stuff. Any stories or interesting pieces? Or am I watching Pawn Stars too much?

Commercial/Industrial Electrician, been working at the new hospital in Auburn bay for the past 3 years. Once the hospital is done I'll be working on the new expansion at the Airport.
Not the best job in the world, but can't complain about the paycheques

Stuff not so much. Pawn stars is a TV show and is very much staged. Hardcore Pawn, a TV show based out in Detroit, is a bit more accurate view into what working at a pawnshop is like. Minus the 300lb+ bouncers and fear of getting shot, lol
We had a gold pin sitting in our display case for years, finally google'd and looked it up, we had a price of $70 on it. It was from some weird rare church, think almost cult like. Sold for $400 on ebay. Lots and lots of amateur porn. And I save most of it. And yes, its the people that sold/pawned it that are on the tape/media. I have no idea how you can willingly pawn an item with your amateur porn on it and not pick it up. Its amazing the type of information people have on their computer when they leave the item behind. I always do a full wipe before I sell it, but I look before hand, lol. I had one video. It had scene after scene after scene of this guy filming himself jacking off outside in different locations. Like what the hell man. That didn't make it to the keeper folder.
Other then that, just stories of roughing up people trying to steal stuff. The boss is a former amateur female kickboxing champ. I've seen her just toon some guys, its fun to watch. One girl got it good too, didn't know what she was walking into... she thought she was tough. We've hog tied a guy in the back with zap straps before. We didn't know what to do so we just left him there for an hour or so. Finally threw finally untied him and thru him out the back door. One co-worker was "spooned" once. He was scared he actually thought he was getting stabbed, luckily the cracker only had a spoon, lol. I wasn't there that day so I didn't see it, but I woulda be freaked, it happened outside the store and people from the coffee shop across the street came running to save him. We laugh about it now.
I've been threatened more time then I care to count. It use to bug me, but its pretty ordinary now. My wife has no clue about that part, if she did she would freak out to much.
