It seems that either the Jays will get discouraged that they can seem to put together a string of wins, or when they do finally ge a sweep or two they will do that 4 or 5 times. Kind of a curious situation.

Chacin looked weak. He seems to be ok through 4 innings and then the fun begins. Hopefully it's just a question of him getting back into game shape.

Jays got some great defense and excellent starting pitching tonight, and managed to scrape out a 5-3 win against the O's. Janssen went 6 innings, giving up just 1 ER, striking out 5 while walking none. His record is now 5-3, with an ERA of 3.07. Ryan got his 15th save with a scoreless 9th.
Janssen is looking really solid. When Burnett comes back on the 22nd, the rotation should be Halladay-Burnett-Chacin-Lilly-Janssen. I don't think Towers will be back anytime soon.

Might want to put Janssen between Chacin and Lilly just to avoid having Lefty's go back to back.

I know its only the 2nd inning ... but what are Campbell and Fletcher doing talking about no-hitters?

Huge series for Toronto this weekend, Detroit is first in the league, but they've lost eight of the last eleven. A great chance for the Jays to pick up some ground on a team above them.

Seems like the Jays have been saying that all year. On the road trip they're 4-3 when they should really have gone more like 5-2. They're a better team this year but I don't think they'll get over the hump. To put things in perspective playing at this clip it will take them 21 games to get back that sweep they gave to Colorado. They have to start sweeping some teams here or start taking 3 of 4 type of thing if they want to be considered a playoff contender past the end of July.

I think the whole idea is to keep alive until Burnett returns.
It's pretty amazing that the Jays are so close when essentially they've had to fill 2/5 spots on the rotation all year long (Burnett's injury and Towers' play). Factor in another spot when Chacin went down as well and it's almost 2.5/5 spots. The Jays just haven't been able to get those 3 or 4 consistent starts in a row needed to sweep a series and the trouble keeping their projected starters in the rotation is why.

Their starting hasn't been the problem, they are getting consistant starts most nights. The bullpen is what is costing the team wins.

Lately.
In April and early May I'd argue that quality starts were the reason the Jays weren't sweeping series.
Towers alone easily cost the Jays a few series - even a few 6 IP, 5 or 6 ER starts from Towers and the Jays probably have a couple more series wins.

Amazing game for the Jays tonight: eight runs in the eighth inning to win 10-5. Just one batter after another getting hits. Every player in the lineup got a hit in the inning except for Rios, who drew a walk.
edit: oh yeah, the bad news: Chacin left in the third with an undisclosed injury.

Chacin is on the 15 day DL. Only good news is Burrnett is back pretty quick here and hopefully he can stay healthy.
Lilly's on the mound tonight, and the Tigers seem to play like absolute crap against any team with a good record, they've just beat up on the lower teams all year. Jays could get there first sweep of the year

In a baseball oddity, Casey Janssen will face Kris Benson of the Orioles tomorrow for the 4th time this season, just 62 games into the schedule.
I wonder what the record is for a single season for one pitcher facing another. The Jays have 2 more series left against the O's after this one, so if the stars align again they could face each other 6 times.

Nice to see some fire coming out of Wells:
Quote:
''It comes down to all 25 guys,'' he said. ''If we're not hitting, the pitchers need to pick us up. If they're not pitching, we need to hit. That's the bottom line. We've got to do what it takes to win games and if we're not doing that, we're going to have series like this."

The Jays made a couple roster moves today -- both should help the team. Russ Adams was recalled after 17 games in Syracuse (.338 average, no errors in last 11 games) and John McDonald has been activated from the DL. Luis Figueroa was demoted back to Syracuse and Edgardo Alfonzo was released outright...
Josh Towers will likely rejoin to the team to start on Wednesday after 3 decent outings in Syracuse. The Jays really, really need him to step up and pitch like he did for most of last season.

Thank goodness Alfonzo is gone, I've only managed to catch a little Jays action this summer but watching him bat was like watching South Africa at the WBC all over again.

Another odd Blue Jay stat I discovered...
Usually players and teams that hit lots of homeruns also strikeout alot. The 2 seem to go hand-in-hand.
The Jays have hit 92 HR's, 2nd in the majors.
The Jays have struckout only 318 times, the 2nd fewest in the majors.
Go figure.
