In case anyone wants to see what the players possession stats have looked like so far.
Solovyov outplayed Bean, but Bean is a vet, so it's not a surprise he gets more leash.
Kerins was bad.
Parekh much better at 5v5 than I expected!
Matvei Gridin is good.
Morton decent. but bottom of the pile against the vets.
Honzek decent. but bottom of the pile against the vets.
Grushnikov looked really good in his game and it shows in the stats (and I was surprised, as I was a big detractor of his before that game)
Pretty much everyone else besides Solovyov who got sent down, kinda deserved it. Some vets are getting more leash, which I suppose isn't surprising. Kirkland is baffling, he's not good, hes barely a vet and he's never been good....
|
I guess I wonder about Morton v Kirkland, but I'm really not gonna get excited over 4th liners. That seems to me to be stricly a coaches preference kind of thing. For all I know Kirkland is better in the dot.

Possession wise, the Flames actually were quite good last night, the goalies were just so ####ing bad there was no chance.
Kerins Zary and Pospisil actually were having a whale of a few shifts together before Posp left.

That's why I asked about Larsson (also waived today). No NHL stats but pretty good in the A and SEL.
Anaheim has to choose between Mrazek and Husso. Chi has 3 goalies but I don't want any of them. TB has 3. Isles too (Rittich anyone?).

honestly the game was probably even outside of the goalies/finish...which seems ridiculous to say. 13-3 in favor of the Flames though might be a stretch.

There is some buzz that if Clay Stevenson goes all waivers, teams would take a look at him. I don't know him well at all. He came up on the 32 podcast a couple weeks ago.

|
Im glad they're getting shoehorned into playing Parekh in the NHL. This organization tends to get cold feet around prospects out of fear of them making too many mistakes that they'd rather overcook them on the Wranglers than ride out the blemishes of that learning process on the NHL team. All to help preserve the dream of sneaking into the playoffs.
Thankfully they're not getting that option here.
This is part of rebuilding and they need to embrace it more often.

So are we going to get the Zary from the first half of his rookie season again?
Haven't seen that guy in a minute now, and he's eating up a coveted roster spot.
The guys below him have shown a little more pop to this point.

With Zary, I'd say the first 10 seconds of his first regular season shift is worth more than every minute he has played in exhibition season. Same with almost all of these guys.

Assuming he doesn't get claimed this somewhat makes sense. Like many have already stated many times you don't really want Kerins on your 4th line, and if Huby is injured to start the season I'd rather reward Gridin with that spot for a few games. I'm sure Kerins will get some games throughout the season.
|
A 2 way contract has nothing to do with wavier eligibility. a 2 way contract is just about how much money the player makes in the NHL VS the AHL. A 1 - way contract means the player makes NHL money while in the AHL.
If Kerins clears hes in the AHL, hes exempt from waivers for 30 day (I believe) so he can get called up and sent down for 30 days without needing it again.

I think Zary is going to be our next big disappointment. He tops out at Mangiapane level. Not the top line player a lot of people are expecting him to be.
Up and down the lineup with spurts on the first line. Only because of the state of this roster.

I haven’t minded Zary at all. He was good last night; Huska even singled him out.

Whomever tracked those stats was either drunk or confused the Flames for the Canucks. Canucks had more breakaways than the Flames had grade A scoring chances.

So to be clear.
Kirkland/Gridin beat out Kerins. Indifferent on this one. Like that Gridin still up.
Bean/Miromanov beat out Solovyov. Don’t get this one. Miromanov is not very good in my mind.
Cooley beat out Prosvetov. This was a choice between a tire fire and a train wreck. Think they need another option here.
Does one more still have to go? Or is huberdeau on the IR

All I can get

Two kids straight out of major junior are poised to crack the opening night roster. Both former first rounders.
What a refreshing change for this franchise.

I was at the game last night and specifically watched Gridin and Kerins.
Gridin does not look like he is 19. He looks like a vet. Plays with poise.
Kerins looked like he was in over his head.

I wouldn't get ahead of myself about Gridin making this team. Cuts aren't done and they're down at least 1 body for practices.
I'm as hopeful as anyone, but call it a hunch. Yes he deserves a look, but I don't think the coach/GM are going to see it like that.
