I think you're right for starters but until that interview I had no idea Lomberg was that jacked! He does not screw around at the gym apparently. Plus, I watched the replay of the 'fight' and you can see Lomburg's intensity. That was rage....like 'how dare you?'

Bastion...I dont know what that guy was thinking. You go in to stick up for a teammate...okay to me it kind of looked like Lomburg was going for a clean hit and slipped whatever, that doesnt really matter but Bastion...at least get your goddamned hands up or something.

It looked like that Simpsons episode where Homer took up Boxing and just let people punch the crap out of him until they got tired.

I guess in my mind...Bastion initiated the confrontation, picked the WRONG dance partner because he looks small...and got comprehensively fed.

"One more fist Mr. Bastion?? Its wafer thin!!"

He F'd around and he found out.

Well duh. That’s literally why some people think the ref should have stepped in. Because he didn’t defend himself. Probably because his jaw was broken and he was concussed.

Not me though. I wanted to see his face turned to hamburger. Lombo should have kept punching until his fist came out the back of the guy’s helmet. Make orphans of his children lol.

All the NJD fans talking about Coleman - I don’t even think of him as an ex-Devil at all.

Agreed. But we should stay the course!

Pretty simple solution to the fighting issue and risk of concussion, if you don’t want to (or are unable to) fight don’t drop the gloves. Bastian decided he wanted to be an enforcer of the unwritten code, and as such there are consequences.

I frankly don’t understand what the whole issue is with this.
Lomberg didn't need to pound him 8 times when he clearly wasn't able to defend himself. A lot of guys would let up. Not Lomberg - he leaned in. At some point that crosses a line where you are trying to injure the other guy. That's not something to be celebrated let alone condoned. Part of the problem was Bastian was pinned against the boards which took away any reach advantage. He was basically defenseless and Lomberg took full advantage.

As for the "simple solution". Depth guys like Bastian know that if they want to stay in the NHl they have to step up in these situation. That's part of the problematic dynamic fighting creates. If you listen to some ex fighters, like Montador, they describe the dread and anxiety going into a game where they knew they would need to perhaps fight. Few people like getting hit the face. We create an environment where these guys feel like they need to do it to keep their job. And not just at the NHl level where these guys make a lot of money, and therefore that makes all of this "OK" to some people. It happens at all levels of hockey where fighting is allowed.

There's an even simpler solution to fighting and risk of concussion. Ban it.

I like a good fight.. but that was hard to watch. I mean, I missed what happened before. Did he do something to one of our players?

I thought he was there longer than he was, but looking it up, he has played more games with the Flames than he did with the Devils (although, he was one of their prospects for many years before he made his NHL debut, so that's why they still have an attachment to him).

Another funny stat line I noticed for Coleman, because of COVID, he only played 64 regular season games with Tampa, but he played in 48 playoff games and won 2 Stanley Cups.

TBQH that was a dangerous play by Lomberg on the hit. Basically headhunting, he saw the guy falling before he went down to that level and basically checked his skull.

Good on that Devils guy for sticking up, shame on the Devils for having it to be a guy who clearly doesnt fight.

The Devils need Lomberg more than the Flames

If they think they are ready to fight for the cup

You can definitely see how Lomberg's play and fire can turn hockey games. He was a major factor in this one, and the players agree.

This is false. Lomberg is already leaning into the hit when the player starts falling. The time it takes for the player’s head to go down to Lomberg’s shoulder level (which is also falling) is less than one second, which is basically impossible to avoid but it’s easier to believe Lomberg tried to bail on the hit than he went head hunting.

I don’t know why people are so dead set on making up stories about what Lomberg did or what Bastian did. There are replays.

I think you pretty much nailed it there.

"Uh...you started this...are you going to do something? Your face is unlikely to tire out his fists....anything?"

Lombo wipes blood from his fist and turns to the oilers-
"Who's next?"

Do the oilers even have someone who would answer the bell, should push come to shove (aside from Perry)? I heard those kinds of guys are in short supply up there these days.

I’ve found Jim Matheson to be in a combative mood recently.

On thread…solid win flames!

I liked him as a Devil. He had 2 20 goal seasons in New Jersey. His time in Tampa is 64 regular season games 48 playoff games and 2 cups.

He’s played more for New Jersey and Calgary. Covid was a wild time.

Yes. Lomberg could have let up too after a few unanswered punches, but hard to pull back in the heat of the moment.
