At the October 2023 presser, the provincial rep said "2026" and the city manager pushed 2027. All indications are handover to the Flames sometime in May-to-August 2027, depending on various factors.

Id love it if it looked like the YMCA in Rocky Ridge . GEC architecture has built IMO some pretty impressive things in Calgary and the Y ia one of them.
For the longest time the RR YMCA had one water fountain station for the entire building. Let's hope that's not the case for the new building.

In terms of reasons for optimism for the design: Dialog's local, and everyone on the design team is undoubtedly aware of the quality of the new builds in the general area (BMO expansion, SAM Centre, Studio Bell, Central Library).

I thought someone said the design didn't have a lot of changes?

With Alberta already confirmed as the host of the 2027 World Jrs. (starting in December 2026), I thought it would be interesting to have the Saddledome and the Saddledon't as the host venues. Canada's first game (with recent Flames' draft pick, Joe Iginla in the lineup) could be the grand opening of the new building.

That seems unlikely at this point though.

It would probably also be a logistical nightmare to have both arenas running games at the same time.

Just looking up how long it takes to build those giant NFL stadiums. SoFi Park took 4 years.

This is like half the size, 3 years seems like a long time. They also took so long to get started.

The Saddledome took over two years to build, and went about 20% over budget because they fast-tracked the construction.

It's not the size of the building that chiefly determines the construction time, it's the number of steps along the critical path of the project.

It's probably safe to assume this project will also be over budget.

Don't most arenas have cost overruns?

The Clippers new arena in LA is also going to be just under 3 years.

The Chase Center in San Francisco was 2.5 years. Little Caesars was 3.

I hope it’s more functional than that Y. What idiot would put the scoreboard directly behind the player’s bench where coaches can’t see it? That useless 12 square foot rink beside the actual rink is hilariously bad, too.

Fun fact - there's really three firms that do the largest chunk of arenas, sports stadia and conference facilities across North America - Populous, HOK, and AECOM. Populous was the convention centre designer for the recently-completed BMO Centre (with S2 and Stantec as the local firms), and HOK is doing the Flames arena (with Dialog as the local firm). We have two of the three foremost architectural experts (IMO) in these building typologies helping shape the future of the Rivers District, which is great.

Yup indeed, I have no idea what the design decisions were that led to the mess that the restroom situation is, seems like some decimal place got missed. The problem is the more time I spend in there the less I can see a solution to that. Great rink in a lot of respects, but the restroom and concourse situation is unforgivable. I suspect a less constrained site will help you guys with that.

We have fire as part of our identity as the Flames, why can't we come up with something exciting along those lines - shouldn't it be easy? Shouldn't there be all sorts of fire themes that would make people think "hell ya!".

I'm tired of arenas named after banks and other financial institutions. And sure I get the reasons why, but Murray has a ton of loot so give us cool stuff.

Just need Fireball to step up and drop a billion bucks on the naming rights.

The teensy sheet of ice is meant for learning.
