Not too disappointed about Kuznetsov anymore since it looks like Grushnikov is exactly what we wanted him to turn into.

Grushnikov. Really calmed things down when he was out there. Always made the smart play and was confident to hold the puck and use his legs when the pass wasn't there.
Yeah, and how about defending that 2-on-1 without a stick. Played it perfectly.

In wondering if the team asked Coronato to take it easy for Dev camp since he's been working out all summer and they want him ramping up for main camp instead.

I had my 2 year old with me today, so I didn't get to video as much as I'd have liked.

There's one player on the ice who's different than all the others.

Kuznetsov was touted to be a defensive defenseman and we used a 2nd round pick. Same as Grushnikov, who actually seems like he should be able to take the step to the NHL and develop into that role.

I think Kuznetsov and Solovyov are in the group that might push for nhl time to start the year. Both are excellent defensively and I believe Solovyov would need to pass through waivers if sent down.

Never hurts to have a bunch of the same types of guys. Keep the best ones and move on to the next group.

Ahh, I see. I don't think drafting Yan at 50 was a huge mistake nor do I believe he is done maturing at 22 years old. I'm way more excited about Grushnikanev, but I didn't think some people were still upset over a 50th pick back in 2020 that's far far better than any Boltmann type pick. Kuznetsov actually still shows some promise, but Dman prospects just happen to be a strength for the Flames now which makes his road to the NHL more difficult. When you look at Yan's peers who were chosen afterwards, not many stand out as huge misses for the Flames.

I think Kuznetsov will play in the NHL at some point...maybe he'll only be a bottom pairing guy, but teams still need defensive players.

Rhett commented earlier this week that Coronato is probably pissed off about going to this camp. If he excels he gets no credit for it because he's expected to. If he doesn't dominate that also gets noticed (like it has been by everyone in this thread). Already over a PPG season in the AHL under his belt. Also as Conroy mentioned in a FlamesTV interview this week - some guys are not going to be very good and game ready in July

Agreed. Wow, I can't believe that was already four years ago.

I think Grushnikov can play middle pairing at the highest level, and he was drafted at #48 three years ago. They should be good comps. Don't know if I see the same ceiling for Kuznetsov.

In any case, it is good to have a collection of prospects because some of them will develop and some won't. If you have enough, you will get most of a team out of it.

Based on the Flames' video with Coronato and the skating coach, it seems like Coronato is very pleased to be training in Calgary right now. She stated that Coronato is remarkable in that he has such a consistent attitude to practices and workouts.

Between Parekh, Brzustewicz, Poirier, Morin and Mews we probably have a couple future offensive Dmen at the NHL level coming soon.

Between Bahl, Grushnikov, Solovyov, Kuznetsov, Jurmo, Hurtig we probably have a couple solid defensive Dmen at the NHL level coming soon.

Appreciate the kind words today. Carter had a great time. I haven’t told him his name is Tacoboy yet. He speaks extremely highly of the whole Flames organization from Conroy to the coaching staff to the development staff.

Standouts for him in his group were Stromgren and Sunyev. Thinks Sunyev could be a player with another year or two at UMass, learning to use his teammates a bit better. Really liked Misa and Basha but obviously very young and raw. Honzec was his golf partner and he said he’s a great guy.

Cool experience for him but now it’s back to Denver to win another title and see where it goes from there. Lots that he needs to work on but it seems like the Flames see a cross between a Derek Ryan and Blake Coleman in him. A PK guy that can chip in offensively and do all the little things that teams need to win.

Maybe he's Tacosboy??? Thanks for the insight from your son and if he develops to something more Colemanish that'd be better now that Ryan has oiler stink on him.

Ya Coronato didn't need to even be here imo.

Not concerned over his performance at all.

I dunno... I think Coronato is a pretty humble guy despite the first rounder pedigree. He knows he's not the college hotshot anymore and he's got lots to learn at this level. Very deferential to his coaches, staff and teammates. His attending is more about working on small details in his game rather than trying to impress in drills and scrimmage.

Danielle Fujita is telling him to push out with his heels positioned a certain way and to keep his elbow down when he's rushing. He's paying attention to that. The new kids are just going HAM because they're eager to make an impression.

There's an Andrew Mangiapane sized hole for him to fill on the Flames. Hope he fills it!

Some observations:

Red
Honzek-Morton-Coronato
Gridin-Littler-Bell
McNamara-Bohlsen-Basha
Janicke

Grushnikov-Parekh
Morin-Topp
Jamieson-Murr

Forwards
27 Coronato
Showed his experience and played similar to the way he plays with the Wranglers. On the puck constantly, generated chances, some nice hands in tight. Scored.

36 McNamara
Played with lots of energy and kept up. No real standout skill.

42 Honzek
Good chemistry with Coronato and Morton. Big, skilled, and good skater. Plays well on the boards and was able to pull the puck off the boards to make plays. He uses his length and made some plays in traffic. Drove the net well. One of the harder shots at the camp. Took a stick or skate to the face partway through and was replaced by Bell on his line.

45 Morton
Really impressed with his speed. Playing with Coronato and Honzek, he had some chemistry and made a lot of smart plays. Scored on a burst of speed through the middle with a strong finish. He is definitely one of the more mature pro-ready prospects. It will be exciting to see how he does in training camp. He could be a find ala Josh Jooris.

46 Misa
Overheard Conroy chuckling and talking to Tod Button throughout the scrimmage: “2 points already! Gotta text Terry (assuming Terry Dolan amateur scout in Ontario) Where did we get this guy again? 150th? Wow!” Misa had a great scrimmage. He’s small, he doesn’t have standout speed, he doesn’t have the edgework of Gaudreau, or a cannon of a shot, but he thinks the game really well. Very opportunistic and jumps on chances quick. He was a connector in the play and was able to make good passes to set up Stromgren that led to a couple assists. He made a lot of subtle positive plays. He scored a nice goal to tie the game in the first half off an intercepted pass. He had another deke goal in the second half. Not sure if he is a centre or left wing at the pro level and he needs some more seasoning in jr, but very encouraging play - definitely more than expected from a 5th round pick.

49 Basha
Played with the pedal all the way down the whole game. Lots of skill and drive to generate offence. Great speed and quickness and his hands are quick too. You could see the high end skill and puck handling. At times it seemed like he may have been trying to do too much.

51 Gridin
Plays the game at his pace. He has great hands - quiet stickhandler and can make moves with easy. He glides to his spots and reads the play well. Doesn’t come across as a high energy player but has the skill and IQ to find his spots. I don’t think he showed all that he has in this scrimmage. I would’ve liked to see him with some higher skilled line-mates than he had today. I’m curious to see to how he plays in the Q.

53 Laing
Big frame. Pretty raw. I’ll be curious to see what if any offense develops.

54 Littler
Big, played hard. Scored a backhand knuckler goal on a broken play.

60 Battaglia
Has that “hard skill”. Can get the puck from the boards to the slot and has good vision. Involved in the play constantly with a high motor. Good frame and good shot. Sneaky backhand shootout goal. Skating speed is ok, but technique could use some development. Complementary player that could fit alongside some skilled players or drive some offence from a lower line.

63 Janicke
Good energy player. Speed, forechecking all over the ice. Puck skills were hit and miss at times but he was in the play.

65 Stromgren
Really improved this year. Looks confident, speedy, strong, and skilled. Protected the puck well, drove the net, made plays from the corners, nice hands near the net, and great finishing. Scored a couple goals. Nice shootout deke - dekes to forehand waits out goalie and then roofs it when goalie is down and out. I’m hoping he has a good training camp and can hang around for a while. I’ll be looking to see him put up point per game stats with the Wranglers and maybe a call up later this season.

73 Lipinski
Skated well and played well positionally. Defensively conscious. His line with Misa and Stromgren generated a lot of offence. One of the stronger centres. Scored a shootout goal.

74 Ciona
Looks really strong this year - I think he may have packed on a few pounds. Tough in board battles, character grinder. Broke up a lot of plays. Thinks the game well defensively but not as strong offensively. His line had lots of good breakouts and puck movement.

83 Silye
Strong, speedy, low centre of gravity. Played hard on the forecheck, battled hard, was in the middle of the action. Would be tough to play against him.

84 Suniev
Excellent hands. Great shot with some deception. Involved in the play offensively, drove the net and tried to create scoring chances. Finds the quiet areas to get his shot off. He scored a dirty shootout goal - fake deke then slowly slipped the puck through the five hole one handed.

85 Hoskin
Did not play - flu. I was hoping to see how he stacked up against this competition - I guess we’ll have to wait until Penticton.

87 Bell
Good frame, good speed. He scored a nice top glove backhand deke, but at other times the hands didn’t look as smooth. Was hoping to have seen more progression from him. He stepped into Honzek’s spot when he needed stitches to the face.

92 Bohlsen
Good size and speed to go with it. Scored a nice shootout goal. He showed strength and physical maturity as a player. Drove the net hard.

95 King
Mature player, played with energy and pace. Defensively conscious. Scored a nice goal on the rush off a pass from Hurtig. Could be one to watch for a Wranglers contract come the end of the college season.

Defence
3 Grushnikov
Fast skater, very mobile and was able to keep up with the speed of forwards - he didn’t get beat on the outside. A real play killer. He broke up a lot of plays and dropped down to block a 2 on 1 pass. An excellent complement to Parekh who he was paired with. Appeared average size although he is listed at 6’1” - but it could be the way that he defends, he leans over his toes quite a bit and is quick to lay his stick on the ice. I think he’ll need a little more strength but I think he gets a long look at training camp.

40 Topp
Paired with Morin. Moved the puck ok but made some mistakes. Some passes were off the mark. Looked like one of the younger d out there.

48 Brzustewicz
Patient and poised with the puck. Quick hands and deftly able to maneuver to create space for offence. I can see the stylistic comparisons to Fox and Andersson as he doesn’t beat you with speed - he sucks you in with patience and holding the puck and then makes a quick move to get by you with his hands and IQ. Moved the puck well. Shot and skating could use continued development. Looking forward to seeing him in the AHL this year.

55 Jamieson
One of the less polished skaters on the back end, but the foot speed was alright. Work with a skating coach will help. Engaged physically but didn’t throw any big hits. Could see him developing into a Pachal type.

56 Mews
Great skater, good speed and creative. Loves to activate in the play. High skill. He scored a nice backhand top shelf deke in the shootout. Stayed with the play defensively mostly due to his great skating. Still young and definitely could use more development but the tools are there. He had a bad turnover at the blueline in 4 on 4 play, but did not seem disinterested in the defensive end, just unrefined.

57 Jurmo
Excellent skater with good speed. Tall and really good length. Moved the puck well with Brzustewicz. Jumped into the play especially when 4-on-4 and 3-on-3. Scored a nice goal sneaking in backdoor on a pass from Battaglia. I’m very curious to see how he does with the Wranglers. You can definitely see the two way potential there and the size is a definite plus.

59 Morin
Stronger defensively than he was in the past. Killed plays and prevented some scoring chances. Moved the puck well. Scored a nice shootout goal.

67 Hurtig
Better mobility than anticipated. Big defenceman who moved the puck well with Mews. Scored a nice goal deking past a forward and wristing it top glove. He should be able to handle big minutes (hopefully in all situations) with the Hitmen this year and I figure he will have little problem adjusting to the NA ice.

78 Isa Parekh
Great skater with similar mechanics to his brother. Smart and decisive with the puck. Moved the puck really well. Made a nice backdoor shot pass that led to a goal. Very slight out there but shifty enough to avoid contact.

89 Zayne Parekh
So skilled. He looks a step above so many of the players there. He always seems to be in motion and changing direction when receiving a pass. He is very deceptive with his feet and hands and constantly in motion. Walks the line impressively. Tried some things like a spin-o-Rama pass. He easily deked around a forward, walked in and scored early in the first - seemed like he scored at will. Shot was hard and accurate, vision was outstanding and passes were crisp. He was zipping passes back door through traffic and it appeared some teammates weren’t expecting him to be able to do that. Looking forward to watching him in Penticton and training camp.

93 Murr
Mobile defenceman, handled and moved the puck well but not sure if the speed is enough yet. Made some nice moves through traffic for a scoring chance that was ultimately stopped.

97 Hennen
Good size, surprisingly good speed. Was playing his off side on a pairing with Isa Parekh. Made some good pinches and was active on the backend. Better than I expected.

Goalies

31 Pelletier
Another young, big goalie with some potential. Covered lots of net.

33 Yegorov
He is a Bobrovsky fan and you can see some of that style in his game. Very smooth and quick laterally. Makes saves look easy and covers a lot of net. Very calm.

41 Tung
Best of the invite goalies. Average size but strong positionally, square to shooters, quick blocker and glove hands. Tracked well and stayed on top of the puck. Deflected shots to corners well and stayed on his toes well. Nice mechanical butterfly.

50 Radomsky
He’s a battler out there. Reads the play and squares up pretty well.

70 McCallum
Made a great split save in the first period of the scrimmage. Got hung out to dry a bit in the second period and got beat quite a few times up high and on cross crease plays. Athletic but maybe too active in the net. Good edge work but a little raw at this point.

81 Murphy
Big goalie. His experience in the AHL was noticeable at this camp. Steady and in position.
