Wow, even lower than 5, at 4.5M? Nice signing by Tre addresses their biggest need. And just to add reasons on why it's a nice deal all around in my opinion, it gets Tanev his bag, it gives the Leafs an elite defenseman finally, and with Tanev potentially getting hurt some time down the line (but hopefully not), those years wouldn't go against the cap anyway with it very likely being pushed to LTIR.

I think the next set of rule changes or harsher penalties are going to be around signing players to extensive deals to curtail cap hit. Tanev may not make it past year 3 of this.
Okay Tanev you got your contract. You can stop blocking shots now. Unfortunately, he won't.
I think it's an okay deal for TOR. They leverage what they have a lot of which is money, so they can save on the caphit for the next 2-3 years. Tanev would be a pretty good partner for either Liljegren, or Rielly. Playing Tanev on the 1st pairing will be a lot of wear and tear, and far from ideal for his body, but I'm sure that he will still be effective.

Tanev is my favorite current player in the NHL. It stinks he ended up on the Leafs but I'm glad he is making bank. Wish he landed somewhere with a chance at the cup.
