2nd line minutes? Are the flames really that bad that mony could get 2nd line minutes?

I would rather have a $4m Monahan than a Mangiapane at $5.8m

Plus that was a questionable Monahan on a hefty contract, versus a rebounded Monahan on a great contract. Cap space is worth a lot these days.

I’d take Monahan back for sure, someone has to play center for this team. The 3rd best center in the org right now is probably Rory Kerins lmao. (Assuming all the wingers on the Flames stay wingers which probably won’t be the case)

Surely there's more than one guy out there.

I know this is debatable, but I believe Kadri has some value as well and if we were to trade him, he would get back more than what the Habs received for Monahan.

I suppose it's a moot point though, because it's pretty unlikely to happen now or in the near future. But IMO, you can't overlook that we also gained an asset in the whole Monahan-Montreal affair. Unless you think Kadri has no value as an asset or to the development of guys like Zary and Pospisil, to which I say to you, good day!

This trade really has nothing to do with the Flames. What does matter to the Flames is the pick we gave up, which will likely be the HIGHER of the Flames or Panthers 2025 1st.

I think there's a 50% chance that the Flames end up with a pick between 11-15 next year and Florida ends up with a pick between 24-30. Then we give up our pick 11-15 and get Florida's pick 24-30...for dumping Monahan. Not a great result.

There's also a 50% chance we completely suck and end up with a 2025 top 10 pick and Florida ends up with a pick 24-30, in which case we give up Florida's pick. Not good, but not disastrous.

I think there's a negligible chance both Cagary and Florida end up with top 10 picks, in which case we end up with one and lose on. Really sucks to lose out on a top 10 pick but we keep one. Not great but at least we get a top 10 pick?

The 1st OV chance is less than negligible so I'm not even going to consider it.

I mean I don't blame most of you for freaking out right now, but your real chance to freak out is next year when we give up 12th overall, which I think is a very likely outcome.

This is no different than losing Dobson, drafted 12th overall with the pick we gave up to the Isles for Hamonic. Once this is all over these two losses will be looked at as pretty much identical.

Whatever. It is what it is and Conroy is doing what he can to recoup some assets and move forward. No need to cry over spilt milk. I wonder if sharks fans cry everyday about losing Stutzle just to get saddled with the albatross Karlsson contract.

Also, what I'm really hoping happens this year is Colorado sees the arms race happening, gets desperate and trades for Kadri for a 1st and a conditional 3rd (and maybe Johansen as a camp dump). Immediate relief for everyone.

Why do we think Monahan wouldn't have re-signed with Calgary the way he did with Montreal?

Handled differently, he might have been very appreciative of the club's loyalty and support.

I presume that is why he signed with Montreal.

I feel like the Flames have kind of done it with Kuzmenko, but I would really love us to take advantage of cap strapped teams this offseason by taking on 1-2 year cap dumps in exchange for picks, and then potentially trading those cap dumps at the deadline.

Doesn't add up.
I think what has been proven and will continue to be proven is the fallacy that Murray Edwards is a Machivallian agent of destruction who stands in the way of a rebuild. He has allowed Conroy to do it so far and I suspect he will continue to allow Conroy to do it. The fact that it was not done earlier seems more likely to be a decision of hockey management and not a decision imposed on them from ownership.

He could have for sure.

But to just draw a line to first round picks without that caveat is pointless.

Do you even remember the turmoil we had last year with the Sutter fiasco and many of our players demanding to be traded after the season, resulting in Sutter's firing? Mony would have had the opportunity to leave that gongshow as a free agent and he would have definitely taken it. He sucked last year so I doubt we would have even been too keen to offer him a contract. I mean if you want to feel awful go ahead and believe what you want but in my opinion, we were never going to be the team to get a 1st for Mony this year. Only thing we did was lose a 1st, which sucks on it's own. No need to compound the situation I think.

If I’m Conroy I’m calling up The Wizard and telling him the price for Tanev has changed due to market conditions. “Brad, the price is now a 1st AND Minten, you pancake eating mother####er!”

Montreal with the best trade tree in NHL history?

Montreal gets:
- 2 x 1sts
- Cond 3rd
- 1.5 years of Monahan

Montreal gives up:
- Nothing

Its great to hear that there are multiple teams looking to add him. Keep driving that price up, hopefully Brad gets nervous of losing out once again and does something drastic
