How the Oilers aren't getting absolutely blasted by the media for the signing is beyond me.

I guess anything is okay if they think it helps McDavid win a Cup. It feels like different organizations are held to different standards, and apparently the standards for the Oilers are anything goes.

Absolutely disgusting by so, so many involved - and not just within their organization.

They should complete the scumbag triumvirate by signing Jake Virtanen

You would think that the contract would be bonus heavy. Cap friendly has them at around 700k at the deadline. So they will need to drop a player like Erne or Holloway to make it work. Even then they are probably having to delay signing because they don't have the space this year. If there are bonuses involved then that will be the gift that keeps giving next year with Brown's overage.

They tried, remember? He just wasn’t even good enough for the Oilers.

Which is saying something, but he also went on to get kicked off some lower level European team, so not entirely unexpected.

Oilers aside, I don't get how these guys are able to sign new contracts.

If you did something serious enough that lets a team walk away from your contract, then surely you shouldn't be permitted to play for another team. If what you did wasn't actually that serious, then why can teams walk away from your contract?

Is this a done deal or is it still a rumor? There's no posting of his actual contract from CapFriendly or from any other NHL player websites.

Still a rumour. Keep in mind as likely as this is in theory, Pagnotta is not exactly the most accurate source.

They're probably putting a feeler out there with this rumour on purpose to see how bad the PR damage will be and if they can get away with it and still remain the media's princesses.

If there's a lot of push back they can retract it and pat themselves on the backs for upstanding morals or something.

The Oilers are the only ones signing these scumbags.

They also have a history of employing garbage. It starts at the top with Bob Nicholson who was the head of Hockey Canada when all these sexual assault issues happened.

Well, we don't know exactly what he did, but he was never suspended by the NHL. Also, depending on how this contract is structured, having his contract canceled will likely end up costing him approximately $2MM in salary. So it's not like there was no consequence to him.

The PA not fighting it is pretty telling.

Will be interesting to see what the conditions of the performance bonus are.

Oilers are already facing a $3.25 million bonus overage for next season because of Connor Brown. If Perry's bonuses are relatively easy to achieve, they will have to add it on top.

So you can terminate contracts without penalty because a player is a mean/tactless drunk off ice?

That's fine if that's the case, maybe it's for the best if the guy was actually causing trouble. But that should also require the players to seek help, go through the assistance program or take a required time away before being allowed back in.

Doesn't make a lick of sense to be able to sever a contract you signed, say "no thanks" with no foul because a guy is a loose cannon (and admits as much), and almost immediately have this player be signable for a tone deaf club like Edmonton.

Pretty ####ed system the league/PA have going on. Talk about negligence and creating a situation where troubled players can jump from team to team and cause problems with no accountability.

Perry has been on four teams before the Oil. Has he always had this reputation?

Come to the Oilers, where they’ll give you a bonus for joining their garbage franchise
