So they re-sign Hanifin and Lindholm, the cap goes up substantially and we'll likely end up with basically the same team and still right up against the cap.

My hope at this point is that Lindholm says he is out.
I'll reserve opinions on Hanifin until the AAV comes out. If it is similar to Weegar then at least it is moveable

Is keeping this group together a big victory?
When it's the same good but not great players but at higher AAVs that will no longer have the motivation of playing for their next contracts..

Aren't we as fans so lucky these guys are blessing us by willing to get millions in raises to stay in Calgary and play mediocre hockey
/s
What a "big victory"

Players not playing up to their contract is a league wide problem. Buyouts are the solution but the setup is slanted too heavily in favour of the players. These retirement contracts are killing the product on the ice. Obviously some players are worth it. Most are not.

I expect that he'll get a full NMC, with some relaxation later in his contract where he'll have to give a list of teams he can be traded to, similar to Huberdeau. No reason for Hanifin to forgo UFA if he can be easily traded.
I'd be surprised if his AAV is less than $7MM, with the cap expected to rise over the next few years. At his age, the number of suitors he'd have in UFA would be many and everyone knows it.

It still feels like the Flames are doing whatever they can to errantly sign players to big contracts to try and recover from Gaudreau/Tkachuk rejecting us and "show" fans that players still want to play here.
I simply cannot believe this organization is this shortsighted.

Assuming Hanifin makes about the same as Weegar.

Yeah it makes no sense.
These guys should be in their primes and the age that defenceman can carry a team to a cup if the team can find the missing pieces upfront.
You find that #1 center and Hanifin walks and we fill the void with the guys in the AHL you start the search for a #1 defenseman.

It's funny how back in April and throughout the summer fans and media were saying players don't want to play in Calgary, what's wrong with the city? The big meanie coach is gone and they still don't want to play here. Now that some players want to stay fans don't want them to sign.

I think the Hanifin situation was read wrong.
He was the only who took some onus on himself to step up at the end of season presser and said he wanted to stay and it felt genuine.
Conroy and Hanifin both said he never said he won't sign, and he didn't ask to be traded out east he just said he won't sign during the offseason.

I'm 'meh' on this, Hanifin is good, but not great. Hopefully it's no more than the Weegar contract.
We have to be making sure that we're making the proper cap room for Makar when he'll be arriving here in a couple years.

Proving Calgary can keep quality veterans is a big part of it. But it’s a signal not just to fans, it’s a signal to the current roster and to other NHLers .
Small-market Canadian teams are already at a systematic disadvantage in today’s NHL. When paired with ownership that won’t tolerate taking a step back, you get the kind of insecurity and extreme loss-aversion that governs the Flames today.

The team seems to be celebrating their own irrelevance. It’s a crazy thing to see.
“We suck, but we get to suck together forever!”

No it’s not. Evidence being the last 88 games showing pretty emphatically that they aren’t good enough to help this team win at a level that would see them make the playoffs.

Hanifin hasn't exactly elevated his play for the sake of an extension or a trade. What's he going to play like after he gets his long term peace of mind?
This team is way too easily satisfied. And maybe that's why they're destined to be mediocre until ownership passes to someone else.

I think it's the bridemaid syndrome personally. "Nobody wants to sign here so we'll overpay in term and dollar to ensure some do stay. Prequalifying question is, are you better than average? If so you're a candidate."

Status quo.

The franchise is not in deep trouble if they sign Lindholm and Hanifin. They are in trouble already because of the contracts they gave to Huberdeau and Kadri.
