This is common practice in the sports industry - you have a broader organization that manages all the "business" aspects of the org and really have nothing to do with the day to day hockey operations of the team. Running CSEC is so much more than just running the hockey team...funny part is right now on the Flames executive team website there is no mention of anybody that actually does anything related to running the actual hockey department https://www.nhl.com/flames/team/executive

The real question I think is actually more why the team hasn't had a President of Hockey Operations since Burke left - since in the org structure that the Flames have that would generally be a necessary role that prevents exactly what just happened with Treliving from happening, and all of a sudden you are left with no real management structure for the Flames.
Again I was referring to hockey ops, not Bean. Hockey ops shouldn't be all ex NHLers, far from it. But Feaster and Holditch were extremes to the opposite end and I would not consider either of them to be students of the game.

But your last point is a good one. We are left wondering what happens when Maloney hires a GM. Is he then gone? Because it sounds like the org's first inclination was to make him GM, so it doesn't seem they value the POHO role all that much.

And as I mentioned, I heard nothing from Bean about why they think Maloney will make a great POHO. Not a word.

Why are they letting an egg salesman be President of a country?

they walk in the locker room and ask "why do these shoes have blades on them? that's not practical."

"Heard it from a guy standing in line behind me at the Orange Julius at West Edmonton Mall."

Fitting last name for an accountant. And here I thought we're talking about the one that went to Toronto

OP is obviously a troll.

John Bean's son was drafted in the first round, so he is obviously embedded in hockey culture and community.

John Bean is obviously more than sufficiently competent, experienced and qualified to work in his role in the Flames organization.

I don't think he handled the press very well the other day, but I can recall Ken King and Darryl Sutter botchiing a few end of season pressers too, after a disappointing season.

It's an obviously awkward situation after a disappointing season. Murray Edwards wouldn't have performed much better answering those questions, in the moment.

I give John Bean credit for standing in there and taking a few lumps.

As for Mr. Edwards, it's time for him to find his preferred method of communicating to stakeholders, knowing that most of the dirty laundry is none of our business.

My speculation is he lost confidence in Brad's ability to find a good coach and he got involved. He might have considered firing Brad at that time (the worst time for Brad), but he felt Brad had earned more benefit of the doubt. I think he would (should) stand by those decisions in hindsight. One year ago it was clear that Sutter was a good coach and that Brad was a good GM.

This year, the poor save%, shooting%, 1 goal losses and OTLs has all contributed to everyone's frustration which continues to fester. Every relationship is under pressure. The fact that people choose to go separate ways is reasonable and not the fault of any one person or thing. Time to accept those decisions and move forward.

Ownership is entitled to be involved in decisions that significantly affect the future of the team, including long term contracts, GM, even head coach (especially at a time when GM has went through several coaches already), but they should take ownership of those decisions and the way they went about them.

I have little doubt that Treliving chose to go another direction. I expect the Flames would have liked to rehire him.

I talked to a friend back home in Calgary who’s met Bean. Told me he’s a very friendly guy and that he was just out of his element being put in a press-conference setting

I know John fairly well. He’s a great guy, always takes time for people. Definitely just out of his element in the presser and going through a difficult time for the organization.
