It's because they know that if you even look an Oiler's player the wrong way, the refs will give the Oilers a powerplay.

If I'm a brute on the other side I charge mcdick in shift 1 and send a message
How hard can it be to put some fear into a guy whenever he's along the boards? Or at least make him think twice. This used to be a routine tactic in the NHL.
Where has that edge gone?
It's like every player was forced to sign a don't touch McDavid agreement before the season started up.
Milan Lucic has a special place always just for knocking the dufus on his ass in game 1. He showed you don't even need to be fast/shifty to hit him. And the entitled brats all became unhinged over a clean hit. It is that easy to get under their skin.
The way teams defend him is pathetic. No pride, and too much respect. #### that.
Will someone actually try to take a bolder approach this time? One can hope.

But they’re told by the coach to not take unnecessary penalties and you’d also get an elbow to the chin in the process. So they just stand back worried he’ll blow by them and when he doesn’t, they’ve missed Hyman going to the net to bury the Bouch Bomb. Puke.

I just can't believe like 25-30 teams in the league seem to fall victim to it the exact same way.
Is there not a coach that does some actual preparation, studies the tape on him and final solution's tendencies on the PP, or is willing to get creative?
Or geeen light the old school physical deterrent approach?
I'm positive this explosion in McDavid points has directly coincided with the league getting notably softer and less physical on defense than it was in the Crosby prime era.

I'm not endorsing Wilson's dirty play, but if you have a loose cannon on the ice when Mcdiver is on, you'd think he won't look over his shoulders.

That's exactly it. He hasn't needed to all year.
No one's given him a reason to even exercise caution dancing around the o-zone.
This isn't the nhl I know.

The most frustrating part is if an opposing players try anything physical, the Oilers are trained to dive and draw a penalty. It makes teams afraid to do anything because the Oilers win off their powerplays. I am hoping that the refs put the whistles away, but it usually doesn't happen in the first few games of a series.
The Kings might be better off just going full goon in the first game to put the Oilers on edge even if it burns a game, rather than getting slow burned for the whole series.

This is so frustrating. Even in Gretzky era, he has to lug around Cementhead to protect him. Teams really need to start hitting that diver, I love seeing his whiny face but instead all I see was his smug face.

Burn game 1 to send a message and make them hurt (/fans, coach and brass lose their minds because they're entitled).
Get your top guns back in game 2 and go for the split.

This is what I'm hoping for as well. Teams should know that even if they play non contact with the Oilers, they're going to dive anyway. If the Kings try to play cautious try not to take penalty, they'll lose.

This thread is mostly expressions of frustrations of seeing your hated team in the playoffs while the team you support is cleaning out the locker room. It's fun to indulge in. I read it with the appropriate amount of humor.
But the bolded above is embarrassing. No need for that. I am aware that the genesis for this was a chyron when Draisaitl was drafted. It was in poor taste then, and it still is in poor taste. Be better.

If it bothers closet Oiler fans like you that much, then nah..
Any one who gets the reference knows not to take the deeper meaning at face value.
Merely harkens back to an amusing #### up by SN. And hey, maybe if Draisaitl wasn't a dirt bag that spears groins then acts hypocrotically by calling out other players for doing less dirty things than he has knowingly done people would've stopped using the reference a long time ago.

Why is it embarrassing? Those bolded messages was to goon it up didn't say go out and injure the dive twins or any of the Oilers. Raise the physicality, hit them with tremendous force instead of pillow.

Loads of closeters or fans considering treason to cheer on "Alberta"
That is what's most embarrassing here.
If roles were reversed and the Flames were touted as contenders you know there would be actually ugly comments thrown around, because oiler fans are generally petulant children.
We're just talking about implementing some old school deterrent against a couple guys that skate a little too freely in the o-zone as things are.

Referring to that Leon meme that made the rounds here and elsewhere without much resistance and then stating facts about him spearing other men's privates might sound out of line but it isn't really because the Oilers invite every knock against them with what they are, how they conduct themselves, and how little humility they possess in doing so.

It's easy to say hit McDavid, but I've never seen a guy look at the puck as little as McDavid does.
He's a freak.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, one of the slowest players in the league in Lucic put Mcbaby on his a** in the series last year. It's not as impossible as you make it seem.
As for the series, a Kings team without their best player in Doughty took these prima donna oilers to 7 games last year. He's one of the few chirpers in the league that has credibility as he's actually won and is one of the best at his position. I'm sure he'll be in Mcdiver's and Craisatl's kitchen all series about their diving antics for PPs and inability to play 5on5. Just like he did with the Edler incident earlier this year. The entitled twins don't get reminded enough as they think they are above all the chirpers. Well Doughty has actually won something and has credibility.
Finally, Todd McLellan will know how to exploit their weaknesses. He'll have a healthier and more talented roster to execute the game plan this time around.

Lucic hit McDavid after the whistle. If you break the rules you can probably get a lot of licks in.
Heck, you could probably run him over with the Zamboni if you get it out on the ice fast enough after the end of a period.
