Winning probably extends that lifespan. Not winning a whole new generation of players who have a different approach to both the game and life in general, well.

These are comments from Doughty after Sutter was fired. Its pretty telling a team and player would be so vocal to have a coach fired who helped them win 2 cups and a Norris. If what he says is true that he makes it impossible to go talk to him you can probably see why we are struggling.

I don't give a s--- where I play. I just want to win Cups, and thats the bottom line
And
Since Sutter was fired in LA
LA
201617 Did not qualify
201718 Lost in First Round, 04
201819 Did not qualify

Everyone so quick to put this crappy season on Sutter. What about last year?
Its not coaching, its the players. This collection of players just doesn't have any chemistry.
Kadri and Huberdeau are not even close to bringing what Johnny and Tkachuk brought. Markstrom has also fallen off a cliff. I dont see how this reflects the coach, if anything it could be on the GM. But to me its the players. I've seen way too many half-assed efforts, slow shift changes, silly decisions with and without the puck, and just overall lack of execution.
When Jacob Pelletier is the standout forward we have some major personnel issues.
Could just be too many new faces and will take a season to come together, or could just be a down year for our top guys. Either way the best course now is a top pick, play some kids, sign Coronato.

I mean, they started a rebuild. They wouldn't have made the playoffs in those seasons with or without Darryl. If anything, keeping Darryl around basically delayed the inevitable.

That's because they started a mini rebuild.
The point I was trying to make is that it was just him but the entire team locked him out and this is after winning cups.
One thing Brad Treliving talked about when he hired Bill Peters was forming relationships and talking to players. We can't have a coach that is not approachable.

Actually, I think the question was more like,
Who would be more surprising to you if they were the GM next year, Treliving or Sutter?
To which he answered neither, which sounded like it was 50/50 in his opinion.
Then he "re-answered it" by saying lots of nice things about Treliving and then saying something to the effect that perhaps he may not want to come back.

It's not just Sutter. It's the sum of all the parts. Though a person could argue that since Sutter has kept the Huberdeau and Kadri line since week 2 of the season, a larger portion of responsibility goes to him for essentially sandbagging his players. Of course flip the coin and Sutters doing so because they've underperformed.
Reality of it all is, it's not working and separating the two is about the only thing left to actually do see if they can find something with anyone else.
It's not gone right at all this year and I agree, there's been simply too much at all once to happen to the team this year.
I've said it all season long, this is a good year for a write iff season. Because there's been so much upheaval.
I'll add Sutter stubbornness about Lewis and Looch is a problem too. We have kids that are ready. They certainly can't do worse.

Then again, Sutter's last 3 seasons in LA:
2014-15 Out of Playoffs
2015-16 Lost in first round
2016-17 Out of Playoffs

I think that this part of Sutter is one of the reasons why the Flames have not named a Captain...no representative from the room to ask questions and/or push back. As mentioned numerous times, I believe that Sutter lost the room (or portion thereof) about 10 games in.

Well the off color comments from Daryll all season probably haven't helped. I know Tanevs "I'm supposed to be a leader I have to do better" speech was a direct shot at Sutter post game shots at the leadership.
Couldn't believe how sour that sounded from of all people Tanev.

He won't play another game in the NHL after this season. Maybe a PTO with exhibitions somewhere at best
Why are we this loyal to a guy on the verge of retirement, over a player like Duehr who likely has unrealized potential - or literally any one else
Sutter only needed to swap Kadri and lindholm

At this point, does it even matter if Lucic plays or not?

My son and I made it down from Regina for the Flames tonight and the Mavs game tomorrow. If you see 2 guys in row 3 screaming for hand pass calls on the linesmen that's us. We debated getting paper bags with teardrops in the event the game tonight doesn't go well but settled for a Zadorov sign for warmies.

When he's actively taking minutes away from Ruzicka and Duehr, while subsequently being by far our worst forward, yes, it does matter.
What the hell is the point of overplaying or even playing Lucic and Lewis at this point? They were brought in here to provide leadership and contribute to a winning environment, yet have failed on both fronts. Those two aren't owed anything by this organization and certainly are not contributing in a positive manner on a game to game basis.

I hate when teams don't play younger guys down the stretch drive, especially over pending veteran UFAs.
They played UFA veterans and injured guys down the stretch in 20-21 instead of playing young guys (Tanev playing with his injuries was ridiculous, same with Monahan).
Young guys can generally provide a spark this time of year, especially when the team is in a bit of a negative place. Pelletier and Duehr both did that.
Doesn't have to be tonight but if by game 72 they remain 8+ points out then I'd like to see Phillips, Zary, Pettersen, Poirier, Wolf, AND Schwindt all potentially get some games in those last 10.
Helps you see what you might have before you go shopping in the offseason too.

Does it matter?
Yes, to my sanity.
Yes, to the team going forward, because if Lucic isn't playing, some kids will and we get to see what we have in the kids.

Only 2 or 3. And I think maybe they used two already on Dueher and Pelletier. The paper transactions.

I'm no Sutter hater, but it's pretty well established that he has a shelf life, so citing a previous year's success (which fell apart in round two) is not quite as effective as with other coaches.
Kadri and Huberdeau are not that far off of what Gaudreau and Tkachuk brought in some years other than last year. Two seasons ago, Gaudreau had a handful more points than Huberdeau this year, and Tkachuk's production was very similar to Kadri's this year. Same for the year before.
A whole bunch of things have happened this year, and some of Sutter's choices have played a part. Lazy line changes? I see a lot of that out of the 4th line (especially Lucic) and Sutter keeps going back to them. The power play has lacked creativity, urgency and direction. He hasn't tried some combos or strategies that I think a lot of armchair coaches have suggested - trying Lindholm/Huberdeau again, giving Lucic a reduced game load, etc.
TBF, plenty of players are doing well. Dube, Backlund, Zadorov are doing better than last year IMO. Toffoli and Coleman are as good, and so is Lewis.
