He gets 26pts in his final 31 games and follows that up with 58pts in 70 games and 49pts in 56 games which works out to 133pts in 157 games or an average of 69pts per 82 games. That production was for nearly two and a half seasons so when those conversations are happening are the Flames even considering going $9.5M for 8 years? Johnny was always dynamic offensively but had a reputation of being pushed around in the playoffs and being a liability defensively.
Is it really a huge failure after watching him for 7 years to not think he was going to put it together for a full 82 games and score 115pts while flashing a 2 way game we had never seen before under any coach before Darryl? Johnny earned what the Flames offered him but had he got $9.5x8 or more after scoring at a 69 point pace for 2.5 years I think a lot of people would have ripped that contract apart at the time.

Again, I don’t know where these numbers are coming from. It’s like everyone is randomly generating some arbitrary cap hit they don’t like to make him too expensive to justify re-signing.
In terms of his scoring woes, I thought he struggled for a portion of 18-19 and most of 19-20. I actually thought he was great in the 2021 shortened season minus that stretch when Darryl was hired. That team had serious challenges scoring and I thought Gaudreau was one of the lone bright spots in what was a disastrous season.
But ultimately, stats are just stats. They can fluctuate in many ways depending on your team, your linemates, your situation and etc. You have to know your player and you need your pro scouting staff to look beyond what’s just on the surface. That’s what these guys get paid to do what they do, they’re supposed to be able to evaluate talent at a level far better than you or I and for myself, I always thought Gaudreau was one of the best line drivers in the entire league. His ability to create something out of nothing was rare and I would’ve easily paid for this.

His family also said if we offered him the same deal he would have signed and of course he would have who wouldn't take 11 million after 3 underwhelming seasons no one knew what the cap would look like.
He screwed us until the last second when he knew all along he was not going to come back.

It wasn’t just about the points though. If you watched them play, even in games where they didn’t produce, they were still generating. The cohesion and instant chemistry was evident in this line dating all the way back to the first time we saw them together on October 26, 2019. They were a dominant line and you could see the ice tilt whenever it was their shift.
Anyways, I think I’m done talking to you specifically about this topic. It’s clear you’ve built up your narrative and your mind will not change on this subject. So it’s best we agree to disagree.

I think as an organization when you boo a player who was amazing and stuck to his deal and gave us so many great moments, it would be telling future players and signings not to take a chance.
I'm not surprised in the CP crab bucket contest, but can we get real and be thankful we had the pleasure of watching this undersized hockey player ruin our opposition on a nightly basis.

lol. Here is a $12mil/year contract!
NO! i heard they booed Gaudreau when he returned to the Dome... hahaha
Boo him because he is a mental midget. He wanted to be close to home because of his Dad's health issue and he didn't. He had a choice of 2 great clubs to choose from and he chose a loser AHL team 1200 miles away.

If we boo Gaudreau and he cries, do we keep booing or is it less fun after that?

The talk that the Flames should have been ready to fork over $9.5x8 after 2.5 years of Johnny playing at a 69pt pace over 82 games just didn’t make sense until he had the season he did in his career year. Not only did he break 100pts for the first time but he broke 40 goals and played a strong 2 way game. The ability to play on both sides of the puck is something we didn’t see at all until his contract year. We saw a streaky score who could play at elite levels at times but seemed to get pushed around in the playoffs and not until he was paired with Lindholm and Tkachuk did he show his ability to play a complete game and be worth the massive investment

Yeah all I can say is once again, I'm blown away at what Sutter is able to do with players and what he can get out of them. He proven it time and time again, and I wouldn't be surprised if playing under Sutter will be the best year of Johnny's career. Skilled, smart, cared about both sides of the puck.

Or ya know, it was the first time in Johnny’s time here since his rookie season that we had a competent coach who put together a good line?

Completely missing my point. Johnny wasn’t signed in the summer of 2021 because the Flames didn’t offer him a huge deal. He earned it through his play in the 21/22 season.
If you look at twitter many of the Flames fans there think this team has a horrible coach right now.
For someone to say the Flames should have known Johnny was a 2 way force any time before last season is not fair. Johnny had a 150+ game run over 2.5 seasons where he looked like a 70pt guy. You yourself were a loud voice stating this team lacked any elite talent after the Canadian division.

Yeah some posters have convenient amnesia
Summer before last we were told this was a terrible bottom 5 team by many.
An 8x9 for Gaudreau wouldn't have gone over well at all...and if they did give him that would he have had the career year?
He seems to be back to an 80 point player who won't play D

That's not how it works according to some people we should have just signed him last off season because it was that simple.
A 65 point player getting 9 million plus and yes it sounds like that is what it would have taken.
He wasn't even viewed as a elite talent by many and started out on the 2nd line.

Why would you feel sorry for Gaudreau? He got PAID, and he doesn't need to play a tiring 200 ft game. He can coast and collect his paycheck and have a longer off season to enjoy life.

Do something like when Lewis congratulated Doughty on 1000 games and then Tkachuk came in. That was fantastic.
