But is it though in this case?
Sure they've got the WC but all they've done is made the whole world aware that they're a scum pos nation with zero tolerance and regards for human rights.
Where as beforehand the majority of us were unaware of how big of a pos they were.
What have they gained here?

And not just money now but a whole bunch of future tourists.
Tens of thousands of people will travel to Qatar and have a good time. Sure, some won’t and will only reinforce negative stereotypes but enough will enjoy the sanitized version of Qatar that they won’t hesitate to go back for another sporting event or a beach vacation the next time they want to get away. This is especially true for Europeans or asians who have much easier access than we do.
Honestly, even if they imprison a few tourists, you honestly think it’ll make enough waves that anyone will care? Enough people will come home and say they had a good time and can’t see what’s so bad about Qatar.

It's successful. PSG and City have legions of fans that mentally backflip to excuse away their owners. Different with a country, obviously, now it's just corporations instead of fans.

Well....they dont do it because it doesnt work, sportswashing has a remarkably successful track record.

The first game in Newcastle last year had a lot of fans dressed as Sheikhs. It's pretty crazy how fast people change their opinions.

It’s sad that sportswashing is so successful. I really wish any team, country, federation had the balls to boycott. But they won’t because blood money is, after all, still money and we all know cash is king.
|
I'm not disagreeing, but did you boycott all American sports during the war in Iraq? It's pretty well documented how many civilians were killed directly by American troops, not to mention the documented atrocities committed by Americans against enemy combatants.
A convincing argument could be made that what America did is far worse than what Qatar did.

Just reading up on it I think its hilarious that they put out a statement asking fans not to do that, then three days later put out another statement essentially "never mind what we said, we think its awesome."

At the end of the day though, they dont give a rat's ass about the club or the supporters, they care about efficiently moving their money.
The club is just a vehicle. The means to an end.
As long as the supporters dont light the place on fire the owners likely couldnt care less.
Actually...they might be happy if the supporters lit St. James' on fire because other than running it through Sports teams, major construction projects are fantastic vehicles to move money around and then at the end you own a highly valued asset that you can cleanly borrow against.
The only drawback is that the permitting tends to be a bitch.

Shortly after the takeover the Newcastle LGBTQ supporters group didn’t take part in the league wide activities for those supporters groups either. I can’t recall the specifics, but it was pretty soon after and very little was said about it. Sportswashing works incredibly well, and the money makes everyone fine with these nefarious regimes.

At the end of the day the vast majority of grassroots social activism is slacktivism. They'll change their Facebook avatars and whatnot but most club supporters just want to see their team win.
Especially teams like Man City and Newcastle. Clubs that suffered for a long, long time with no investment and as the 'Little Brother' to other, bigger clubs.
The average Joe on the street doesnt care. And why should they? They cant influence anything.

Kinda hoping they rig the whole tournament so Qatar wins, that might finally be enough to end FIFA as no one would ever take the tournament seriously again. But yeah I thought as this thing got closer I would get enthusiastic about it, but I can't. It's a sham, so now I'm rooting for maximum corruption in the hopes is might bring some people, and FIFA as a whole, down.

That would be brilliant. I'd be all for it.
"Hey...is that Qatari player just Messi with fake glasses and a moustache?"
On the other hand, I'd also be all for Qatar just getting absolutely and embarrassingly pumped for a dozen goals. Over and over.

I just love the idea of Qatar playing every match 11v8 cause of multiple extremely questionable straight reds against their opponents. Like don't even hide it, make as much of a mockery of things as possible.

They already rigged a tournament for South Korea to do well.
Nobody seemed to bat an eyelash then.
Qatar will probably make it to the Round of 16 - since that's what always seems to happen for the hosts. They will get some favorable calls for sure.

Its actually going to be really interesting to see.
Nobody really cared all that much about South Korea, but a lot of people seem genuinely pissed about this.
If it were me, I'd be taking it to Qatar. Just pump the hell out of them for goal differential.

It might be many things but profitable this will not be.
Millions of what? It's costing them a fortune. Over $200bn

Hosting the World Cup draws massive exposure to a host country in terms of tourism, foreign trade, jobs and the potential for new development. But that can come at a huge cost. For the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which runs from Nov. 20 to Dec. 18, the government is shelling out roughly $229 billion, making it the most expensive ever.
That total is almost five times the combined amount of $48.63 billion spent on the events that decide national soccer supremacy from 1990 to 2018. World Cups are played once every four years.....
.... The three main moneymakers for FIFA come from broadcasting, ticket sales and marketing revenue, which all go to organization. It also allocates funding for the host countries to cover the tournament’s overall operations. For 2022, FIFA shelled out roughly $1.7 billion to Qatar, including the $440 million in total prize money for teams. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar is expected to bring in $4.7 billion in revenue.
